Yale Sweeps Ivy Foe Cornell On Senior Day

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men’s swimming team posted an impressive 186–114 win versus Ivy foe Cornell on Senior Day at Kiphuth Pool. The Bulldogs stretched their current winning streak to four while also moving to 3–1 in conference play.

Sophomore Liam Bogart continued his tremendous season by taking first in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing with a 9:33.10 time. First-year Joseph Page was equally as dominant in his 200-yard freestyle event, winning with a time of 1:39.30.

Senior Henry Gaissert has been having a superb senior year and his excellent form was on display today. He finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a 20.37 time. Page was also again on top, winning the 100-yard freestyle event with a 44.61 time. Senior captain Matt Slabe was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing with a 4:37.99 time.

First-year Conor Lee won his 100-yard butterfly event with a time of 48.98. To cap of the ideal day for Yale, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Page, Gaissert, sophomore Philippe Marcoux, and sophomore Nathan Stern took first with a 2:59.38 total time.

Next up, Yale squares off in the annual HYP meet with Harvard and Princeton starting on Jan. 31.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women’s swimming and diving team completed its meet against Cornell on Saturday afternoon, taking down the Big Red by a score of 196-98. The Bulldogs are now 7-0 on the season.

Yale recorded the top time in every single event. In the sprint freestyle events, sophomores Izzi Henig (23.56), Raime Jones (51.95) and Marlise Moesch (1:52.10) took first in the 50-yard, 100-yard, and 200-yard freestyle, respectively. In the distance events, sophomore Ashley Loomis won the 500-yard freestyle (4:54.61), and captain Kendall Brent took the 1000-yard freestyle (10:15.25).

First-year Jessica Whang led the Bulldogs in the breaststroke events, taking first in both the 100-yard (103.60) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.94). Fellow first-year Jaime Yeh won the 100-yard backstroke (55.66). In the 200-yard backstroke, junior Cate Sawkins placed first, touching in at 2:01.80.

The upperclasswomen paced the Bulldogs in the butterfly events. Senior Lili Margitai won the 100-yard butterfly (57.02), while junior Caitlin Tycz won the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.33). Sophomore Olivia Paoletti recorded the top time in the final individual event of the day, the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.78).

The Bulldogs’ next meet is the annual HYP meet, which will be held in Princeton N.J. this year. The meet will kick off on Saturday, February 1.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Ryan BrownPaige daCosta, and James Huang all secured multiple individual event wins for the Big Red men’s swimming and diving team on Saturday morning, but it wasn’t enough to help Cornell overcome Yale, as the Big Red fell to the Bulldogs, 186-114, in New Haven, Conn.

With the loss, the Big Red dropped to 3-5 overall and 1-5 in conference action, while Yale improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Ivy League.

Senior tri-captain Brown made the most of his appearances in the breaststroke events, winning both the 100-yard breaststroke (56.75) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:02.69). Brown had good company in the 200-yard breaststroke, as Jacob Bass notched a top-three finish, touching the wall third in 2:07.94.

Huang emerged victorious in the 200-yard butterfly, winning the race in 1:48.92. He did not stop there, however, also picking up a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (49.14).

daCosta’s reign during his freshman season continued on Saturday, as he notched at least three individual-event wins for the third-straight meet. daCosta collected victories in the 100-yard backstroke (48.98), 200-yard backstroke (1:48.41), and 200-yard IM (1:50.96).

With daCosta at the lead, the Big Red went 1-2 in the 200-yard IM, as Ricardo Martinez finished just behind in 1:51.54. This top-three finish was just one of three for Martinez on Saturday, as he also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.23) and third in the 100-yard freestyle (46.51).

Jack Mahoney and Jameson Crandell recorded top-three finishes of their own, as Mahoney finished third in the 50-yard freestyle (20.79) and Crandell placed third in the 3-meter diving with 304.65 points.

The Big Red men’s swimming and diving team will return to Ithaca, N.Y. to host Brown on Jan. 24-25 in its final meet before the Ivy League Championships on Feb. 26-29. The diving events are scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start on Friday, Jan. 24, with the swimming events following on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 3 p.m. at the Teagle Pool. The meet will also be the Big Red’s senior day.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Unbeaten Yale was just too much for the Cornell women’s swimming and diving team to handle, as the Bulldogs defeated the Big Red, 196-98, on Saturday morning in New Haven, Connecticut. With the loss, Cornell drops to 2-6 overall and 0-6 in conference action, while Yale improves to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the Ivy League.

Demetra Williams picked up Cornell’s lone win of the meet in the 1-meter diving, grabbing the victory with 258.30 points. Elise Jendritz also notched a top-three finish in the event, placing third with 246.90 points. Williams and Jendritz are beginning to make quite the diving duo, as the pair also did well in the 3-meter diving, finishing second (288.83) and third (278.85), respectively.

Maegan Rudolph notched the Big Red’s top finish in the swimming events, touching the wall second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.63.

A trio of Cornell freshmen were faces to watch on Saturday, as Melissa Parker, Aviva Muñoz, and Alexandra Handlin all recorded top-three finishes in their respective events. Parker finished third in both the 50-yard freestyle (24.52) and 100-yard freestyle (53.84), while Muñoz placed third in the 100-yard backstroke (59.14). Handlin finished third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.58).

Laurel Kiselis and Sophia Cherkez also performed well, as Kiselis placed third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.29) and Cherkez finished third in the 200-yard IM (2:08.19).

The Big Red women’s swimming and diving team will return to Ithaca, N.Y. to host Brown on Jan. 24-25 in its final meet before the Ivy League Championships on Feb. 19-22. The diving events are scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start on Friday, Jan. 24, with the swimming events following on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. at the Teagle Pool. The meet will be the Big Red’s senior day.
