Although top guns to the tune of Gabriele Detti, Gregorio Paltrinieri, Thomas Ceccon, Simona Quadarella and Benedetta Pilato are absent from the entry list, this year’s Nico Sapio Trophy is still offering a stacked lineup of Italian talent.

World Junior Record holder Simone Cerasuolo is expected to race this weekend in Genoa, with the 19-year-old entered in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events. The teen set the world marks at 25.85 and 56.66, respectively, at last year’s Italian Championships.

Matteo Rivolta, a two-time individual medalist from the 2021 FINA Short Course World Championships, is ready to rumble. The veteran is set to race 100m back, 50m fly and 100m fly. It was the butterfly discipline in which the 30-year-old grabbed hardware, taking bronze in the 50m and gold in the 100m last year in Abu Dhabi.

The reigning short course world champion in the 200m fly, Alberto Razzetti, as well as the reigning 100m free champion, Alessandro Miressi are among the entrants, as are Italian racing mainstays Elena Di Liddo, Ilaria Bianchiand Silvia Scalia.

The meet represents a qualifying opportunity for this year’s Short Course World Championships set for Melbourne, Australia next month.
