Day two of the 2026 Edinburgh International saw world champion Freya Colbert make history on multiple levels on her way to winning the women’s 200m freestyle.
After nabbing the second seed this morning in 1:59.83 behind top-seeded Theodora Taylor‘s time of 1:59.55, Loughborough’s Colbert crushed a big-time swim of 1:54.98 to roar her way to gold.
In doing so, Colbert surpassed her own former British national record of 1:55.06 the 22-year-old put on the books en route to placing 4th in the event at the 2025 World Championships. This means Colbert is the first-ever swimmer from her nation to dip under the 1:55 barrier.
Olympic teammate Abbie Wood settled for silver in a respectable 1:57.23 while Leah Schlosshan rounded out the podium in 1:58.28.
The split comparison between Colbert’s former and newly minted British national record-setting swims is below, showing how she was slower on the opening 50m but applied that slight energy conservation later in the race.
| Colbert’s New 1:54.98 200 Free NR | Colbert’s Old 1:55.06 200 Free NR |
| 27.47 | 27.21 |
| 28.63 | 28.85 |
| 29.47 | 29.57 |
| 29.41 | 29.43 |
Considering this is a non-championship affair, the fact Colbert beat her national record is extremely encouraging, with the all-important Aquatics GB Championships on the horizon for next month. That competition represents the sole qualification opportunity for the 2026 Commonwealth Games held on British soil in Glasgow, Scotland.
Tonight’s performance ranks Colbert as the 24th-best performer of all time as well as the 3rd-fastest on the season.

SwamSwum global reach and interest is legit!
Sadly the comment sections have devolved over time and sent a lot of (non-American) former commenters packing.
its all about short course yards and enhanced games.
Fantastic performance, she is going from strength to strength and has to be considered a legitimate contender now.
Loughborough on top, Stirling wish…
Very impressive. This event’s getting stacked internationally with a ton of 1:54s, even if you take out MOC’s (and presumably Summer) ability to go 1:52
