Winter Juniors Qualifier Michelle McCord Verbally Commits to Illinois

Canton, Georgia’s Michelle McCord has verbally committed to the Fighting Illini for the next four years. McCord is a senior at Creekview High School and swims for Chattahoochee Gold.

“I am so excited to announce my commitment to swim and study engineering at the University of Illinois for the next four years! I chose Illinois because of the academics and the athletics both being so good. The team and coaches at Illinois are so supportive. Coach Sue and Alec have made Illinois into a swim program that is thriving and continues to get better each year. The overall improvement of everyone on the team is outstanding. Academically, Illinois has one of the best nuclear engineering programs for plasma, making the school a great fit too. I can’t wait to be a Fighting Illini next year!”

At the 2017 GHSA State Swimming and Diving Championship for 7A & 6A Schools this past weekend, McCord placed third in the 200 IM (2:02.43) and sixth in the 100 breast (1:03.62), earning new PBs in both events. She also led off Creekview’s 200 medley relay (27.09) and 400 free relay (53.71) in prelims.

McCord’s best SCY times include:

  • 50 back – 26.80
  • 100 back – 57.25
  • 200 back – 2:05.39
  • 100 breast – 1:03.62
