William & Mary Roll Through CAA Pod Meet With Delaware, UNCW

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Delaware swimming & diving teams were in the water on consecutive days at JMU in the Pod meet on Saturday and Sunday alongside the Dukes, William & Mary and UNCW.

The women were able to edge out UNCW by a 180.5-165.5 final to highlight the event, led by sophomore Taylor Draganosky who took home the 200 yard breaststroke, was part of the 4×100 medley relay team that took home second, and was silver in the 100 breaststroke.

Also a member of the second-place 4×100 medley relay was freshman Christine Gallagher who grabbed silver in the 200 yard butterfly with a season-best time of 2:07.67 and classmate Natalie Dobrzykowski had three second-place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle, the 100 yard freestyle with a season-best 51.61, and the relay.

On the men’s side, senior Kevin Basch brought home a pair of silvers in the 1650 yard freestyle and the 500 yard freestyle with a season-best time of 4:39.22. Freshman Doug Vaga was another second-place finisher in the 3-meter dive.

The Blue Hens will be back in action next weekend, traveling to La Salle to meet up with the Explorers and Rider, Nov. 9 at 10 a.m.

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Senior Will Countie and junior Josh Rigsbee earned wins in the 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke, respectively, to lead UNCW on the final day of the Colonial Athletic Association pod meet at Savage Natatorium on Sunday.

The Seahawk men split their meets, knocking off Delaware, 270-82, and falling to William & Mary by a score of 199-147. The women were swept by William & Mary (222-118), James Madison (222-118) and Delaware (180.5-165.5).

Countie posted a time of 1:51.07 in winning the 200 backstroke and sophomore Brent Hoshall took second, touching the wall in a time of1:53.61.

Rigsbee, meanwhile, swam a time of 2:07.04 to take first in the 200 breaststroke.

For the women, junior Evan Arsenault finished third in the 100 Free.

UNCW took second and third in the men’s 400 Free Relay to close out the meet.

Adding top-three finishes for the Seahawk men were Jack Cosgrove (second, 100 Free), Aidan Snively (third, 500 Free), Connor Forsythe (second, 200 Fly) and Noah Cahan (third, 200 Fly).

UNCW closes out the fall semester on Nov. 21-23 at the Patriot Invitational.

The William & Mary men’s swimming team won 10 of 12 events Sunday on the final day of the CAA Pod Meet, en route to a sweep of team meets against UNCW and Delaware to break one of the program’s oldest records.  The Tribe won 199-147 over the Seahawks and 253-87 over the Blue Hens, to improve to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in conference action.  With those two wins, W&M has now won 16-straight dual meets against Colonial Athletic Association foes, breaking the all-time team record of 15-straight conference wins that had stood since 1975.

– First up was the 500 free, and senior Ben Skopic (Marriottsville, Md.) swimming an unusual event, for him, earned two wins with a 4:39.21 performance.  He won by the slimmest of margins, 0.01 seconds, with a furious sprint to the finish.

– In the 200 back, senior Philip Barto (Midlothian, Va.) earned the win over Delaware in 1:54.55, his first victory of the season.

– Senior Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.) kept the wins coming with two more in the 100 free, timing 44.70 to win by a body length.

– His classmate Ian Bidwell (Pelham, N.Y.) added another win over Delaware in the 200 breast, stopping the clock in 2:08.68.

– Senior Chris Balbo (Short Hills, N.J.) won the 200 fly against both teams in 1:51.43, finishing a remarkable career at this meet.  In four years, Balbo has gone 17-3 in his individual events, including a perfect 12-0 in the last two years.

– Wrapping up the weekend was the 400 free relay, where Jack Doherty (Middletown, Conn.)Ian Thompson (Alexandria, Va.)Christopher Pfuhl (Charlotte, N.C.), and Wright swam 3:02.84 to add a final two wins to the team total.

William & Mary is back in action next weekend, heading up to Lexington, Va., to face VMI on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m.

Women

The William & Mary women’s swimming team finished a very successful weekend at the CAA Pod Meet on Sunday, picking up wins in two of its three meets.  The Tribe powered past UNCW 222-118 and also beat Delaware, 193-139, while falling only to host James Madison, 236-110.  W&M improves to 2-4 on the season, and 2-2 in conference action.

– The first of the six events on the day was the 500 free, where junior Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) added wins over UNCW and Delaware to her season total.  Bull, who is the two-time reigning CAA Champion in the event, swam 5:03.83.

– In the 200 back, junior Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.) earned two wins of her own over UNCW and Delaware, stopping the clock in 2:04.64.

– Freshman Peyton Proffitt (Richmond, Va.) earned the win over the Seahawks in the 200 breast, timing 2:25.17 for her second win of the season.

– Her classmate Grace Tramack (Palo Alto, Calif.) hit the winners circle for the first time in her collegiate career in the 200 fly, timing 2:07.96 to beat all opponents from UNCW.

– Wrapping up the weekend was the 400 free relay, where the team of Katie Stevenson (Wilton, Conn.)Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Va.)Inez Olszewski (New York, N.Y.), and Bull combined to swim 3:31.31 and deliver wins over Delaware and UNCW.

William & Mary is back in action next weekend, heading up to Lexington, Va., to face VMI on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m.
