The University of Michigan men and women maintained their perfect records last weekend in a double dual meet with Pitt and Oakland at Canham Natatorium, as both squads cruised to a pair of resounding victories.
WOMEN’S RECAP
The Wolverines won all but two events on the day, with sophomore Leila Fack and junior Bella Sims leading the way with two individual wins and contributing to one relay victory apiece.
The meet kicked off with the 200 medley relay, where Sims led off in 24.17 and was followed by Letitia Sim (27.49), Brady Kendall (23.53) and Stephanie Balduccini (22.33), combining for a time of 1:37.52, topping runner-up Pitt (1:40.58) by more than three seconds.
Sims’ first individual event was the 200 fly, where sophomore Hannah Bellard claimed the win in 1:54.42, and Sims was a close runner-up in 1:55.01. Bellard was slightly faster, 1:54.07, in October against Northwestern and UCLA, while for Sims, it’s her first time racing the 200 fly since clocking 1:53.67 at the 2024 UGA Fall Invitational last November.
Sims went on to claim individual wins in the 500 free (4:45.40) and 200 IM (1:58.14), winning the former by nearly 15 seconds officially, though Bellard clocked 4:46.45 swimming exhibition. In the 200 IM, Bellard was also second-fastest in 2:01.32, also as exhibition.
Fack won the 200 free early in the meet in a time of 1:49.81, and followed up by topping the 100 free in 50.18. It was her first time racing the 200 this season, while in the 100, she’s been as fast as 49.85, done in early October.
Fack put on a bow on things in the 400 free relay, anchoring the Wolverines to victory in a time of 3:18.94. The squad features Balduccini (49.74), Kendall (50.28), Lexi Greenhawt (49.64) and Fack (49.28).
Kendall also won the 50 free (22.73) over Balduccini (22.88), Sim won the 100 breast (1:01.15) and Greenhawt prevailed in the 100 back (53.11) for Michigan in the pool. German sophomore Marian Ploger also won the 1000 free (10:04.29) and freshman Natalie Walklett topped the 200 breast (2:17.61) for the. Wolverines.
On the boards, senior Kiarra Milligan picked up a sweep by winning the 1-meter (320.00) and 3-meter (339.00) diving events.
For Pitt, the lone winners were Sydney Gring in the 100 fly (53.46) and Claire Jansen in the 200 back (1:58.01).
MEN’S RECAP
The men’s meet marked the return of Michigan senior Jack Wilkening, who did not compete early this season due to undisclosed medical reasons.
Wilkening opened the meet with a 21.77 lead-off leg on the 200 medley relay, giving the Wolverines an early lead as they rolled to the victory with Luka Mladenovic (24.53), Ole Mats Edam (20.84) and Tyler Ray (19.10) finsihing the job in a time of 1:26.24.
Later in the meet, Wilkening won the 100 back in 48.29, capping his first competition since August.
Mladenovic was the top point producer of the meet, as the Austrian freshman went three-for-three individually with wins in the 100 breast (53.92), 200 breast (1:57.93) and 200 IM (1:47.75). The 200 IM swim was his first time racing the event in yards, while in the breaststrokes, he set respective season-bests of 51.86 and 1:53.88 in late October against Northwestern and UCLA.
Also earning multiple victories for the Wolverines were Canadian freshman Antoine Sauve in the 200 free (1:36.47) and 500 free (4:27.58), and senior Tyler Ray in the 100 fly (46.77) and 200 fly (1:44.77).
Sauve set PBs late last month in the 200 free (1:34.12) and 500 free (4:20.74), while Ray established season-bests in the 100 fly (45.75) and 200 fly (1:42.59) at the same meet (v. UCLA and Northwestern).
In the 400 free relay, Eidam (45.47), Sauve (43.38), Logan Zucker (44.24) and Ray (43.74) combined for a time of 2:56.83, giving Michigan a near one-second win over the Panthers (2:57.79).
Starring for the Pitt men was sophomore Julian Koch, who topped the 50 free (19.83) and 100 free (43.99) while also leading off the Panthers’ 400 free relay in 43.02. Koch set respective personal bests of 19.20 and 41.85 last month against Penn State.
Other winners for Michigan were Josh Brown in the 1000 free (9:14.19), Eitan Ben-Shitrit in the 200 back (1:45.47), Julian Cardenas in the 1-meter diving event (322.45) and Emmitt Reesor in the 3-meter diving event (381.20).
