What Will Shaine Casas Swim at the 2023 U.S. World Championship Trials?

Shaine Casas ripped a 1:56.06 200 IM at the Westmont Pro Swim touching second to Leon Marchand‘s 1:55.68 — both finishing under the previous Pro Swim Series record of 1:56.32 set by Michael Phelps back in 2012.  Shaine’s personal best is 1:55.24, so swimming a 1:54 something in the 200 IM  is certainly within range.

Shaine was sick at the 2022 International Team Trials (aka U.S. World Champ Trials) last year.  In this interview he shares that swim fans can expect him to open up his schedule a bit this June racing in more events.

PREDICTIONS

Last year in my predictions for 2022 U.S. World Champ Trials, I noted that I wanted Shaine to make Team USA. He just needed to get on deck at an international meet wearing the red, white, and blue for the experience. He got that, and he picked up a bronze medal in the 200 back. Now it’s time to level up.

Day 1 – 100 free?  Shaine’s PB is a 48.23.  In this interview he mentioned that 100 free is on the table. Dipping into the 47s could put him on the 4×100 free relay. It’s a stretch, but he’s got the talent to do it.

Day 2 – 200 back & 50 fly? I don’t care about 50s because you can’t swim them at the Olympic Games, but if he swims it, I want to see a PB. 200 back? That’s his bronze medal event from 2022 World Champs, where he touched the wall in a 1:55.35. I’d like to see a 1:54 anything.

Day 3 – 100 fly & 50 back?  His PBs a 50.40. Ripping a 49+ would be great! 50 back? 23.77.

Day 4 – 100 back?  I don’t know. You tell me, but he needs to be under his PB, 52.51.

Day 5  -200 IM? As mentioned, swimming a 1:54 anything would be on point.

But who cares what I think? It’s all about what you think. Drop you comments below.

A 47 “could” put him on the relay?

You think there will be 7+ 47s at trials?

23.77 at the 50back?
Loved to see that!

I hope he breaks out of his shell and swims everything. I don’t even care what the results are . Just Casas 24/7 for the entire trials meet. If he needs to he can clean up his event entries for worlds after the trials meet is over.

I don’t think there is much point to him swimming the 100 back tbh. It might be better just to have a rest day before the 200 IM imo.

100 Free – I don’t know about a top 6 spot. Dressel is a “?” and the field in this event I feel is going to start rising – Armstrong, Alexy, King, Curry, Held, Kibler, K. Smith…not to mention young up-and-comers Winkler and Heilman. I think he **can** get 5th or 6th – it is a tough ask though.

200 Back – 1:54 would be great for another podium finish at Worlds. The danger I feel here besides Murphy is actually Carson Foster – IMO Carson’s best swim at the last PSS was the 200 Back – Diehl is constantly improving too. IF Foster swims it, I think Casas fails to make the team in this event.

100 Fly –… Read more »

My trials predictions for Casas
200 back- 1:55.0 for second behind Murph
200 IM- 1:55.6, touching just ahead of Foster for first
100 fly- 50.6 for first
100 free- 48.1 for a relay spot
100 back- pb but he comes in 3rd behind Armstrong and Murph
I think he skips the 50 fly and gets 3rd in the 50 back
