Waterloo swimming soared to a new Winter Junior’s West Meet Record in the 200 medley relay tonight, shaving 0.15 seconds off the 2016 mark held by Scottsdale Aquatics Club. They brought the record down below 1:27 for the first time, and took gold by seven-tenths of a second.

The team of Ben Jaggers, Max Laine, Auston Ross, and Julian Rusk, all 17 years old, combined for a time of 1:26.96 to undercut the near-decade old previous mark of 1:27.11. For Jaggers and Rusk this was their second major record of the year in the 200 medley relay, after they set a 15-16 NAG Record in the LCM version of the event this May.

The gap between the two teams was just 0.11 seconds at halfway, although there were big differences between the splits. Ryan Hoffer led off in 2016 with a stunning 21.04, 0.59 seconds faster than a still-quick 21.63 from Benjamin Jaggers for Waterloo, but Max Laine was 24.25 this year for an over seven tenths gap.

Austin Ross and Julian Rusk were essentially a wash with Ray Van Deusen and Jack Blake. with Ross slightly faster than the record and Rusk slightly slower. He still anchored sub-20 in 19.70, just 0.18 slower than Blake nearly a decade ago.

Waterloo are the #5 seed in the men’s 4×100 medley relay later in the week, and have stars Benjamin Jaggers (100 back, #8) and Max Laine (100 breast, #12) seeded highly as they look to continue their fast start to the meet. Coached by Will Trusler, the club founded only 15 years ago continue to go from strength-to-strength this year.
