VMI Men, Mount St. Mary’s Women Earn Wins In Final Meet At Clark King Pool

LEXINGTON, Va. – Led by eight first-place finishes and a strong showing by the divers, the VMI men’s swimming and diving team took home a victory Saturday over Mount St. Mary’s University (Md.) 153-145 in the final swim meet to take place in historic Clark King Pool. The Keydet women’s team held a lead midway through the competition, but fell 173-115 to the Mountaineers.

With the victory today, head coach Scott Thacker recorded his first win at VMI. It is the last varsity swimming and diving meet scheduled to be held in Clark King Pool, as the new aquatics facility on Post is set to be completed over the Christmas furlough.

“I am incredibly proud of our performances from both squads today in our final meet in Clark King,” said coach Thacker. “Our Keydets competed with pride, energy and enthusiasm from beginning to end.”

Men’s swimming highlights:
*Ethan Griffith and Conner Jorgensen swam to a 1-2 finish in the 1000 free
*Chase Lane placed first in the 100 breast
* Griffith notched another first-place finish in the 200 fly and earned his third victory of the day in the 400 IM
*Chino Vera placed first in the 100 free
*Jack Sheehan took first in the 100 fly

Women’s swimming highlights:
*The trio of Sarah LiebenowAnna Grace Adams and Sadie Smith swept the top three spots in the 1000 free, finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd
*Noelle Tong picked up her first college swimming event win in the 100 backstroke
*Courtney Novotny and Jessica Cox finished 2nd and 3rd in the 100 breast
*Rachel Greathouse won the 200 fly
*Carter Wasser finished 2nd in the 200 back

Diving Highlights:
*The VMI divers outscored MSM 55-18 in the last home meet in Clark King Pool.
*The men’s team, led by Bridger Thurston’23, took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd on both 1M and 3M boards.
*Lane Jones recorded a PR on the 3M board (taking 2nd place).
*The women’s team was led by senior London Yerasimides who placed 1st on both the 1M and 3M boards.
*Ella Davenport recorded a PR on the 3M board, taking 4th place.

EMMITSBURG, Md. (November 5, 2022) – Mount St. Mary’s women’s swimming and diving delivered a decisive victory over the VMI Keydets, winning 173-115 in Lexington, Virginia. The men’s team recorded six individual and two relay victories but fell in a competitive dead heat, 153-145.

Senior Montana Griffith took the biggest individual honor, breaking the school’s record score for the 3-meter dive at 186.90. The mark surpasses Laura Kingham’s total of 182.45, also set against VMI back in March of 2021. Griffith also excelled in the 1-meter event with a posting of 190.25.

Winning events that came with a few seconds of the school record include Christina Lazari with her time of 2:30.43 for the 200 breaststroke, within striking distance of Alyssa Felos’ all-time mark. The freshman also recorded a victory in the 50 free registering at 25.22 seconds. On the men’s side, the 200 freestyle relay winning team of Nicholas SantorelliAustin TolandGriffin Distler and Peter Jones finished in 1:26.66, three seconds off the record time.

Santorelli, along with Lazari and Meghan Speicher, each won multiple events. The junior won the 100 backstroke (52.39 seconds) and the 200 back (1:57.17). Speicher hit the touch pad first in both the 100 and 200 free (54.57 seconds, 1:59.47).

The Mount captured a win in 20 of the dual meet’s 32 events. For the women’s team, Saturday marked the 18th victory in program history over the Keydets.

Two weekends from now, Mount St. Mary’s makes their annual journey to Lancaster, Pennsylvania for the Franklin & Marshall Invitational. Competition begins Thursday, November 17th.
