Video Interview: Nathan Adrian Scratches 50 Free, Talks with SwimSwam Before Leaving LA Invite

Nathan Adrian ripped a 21.90 in prelims of the 50 free at Los Angeles Invititational, posting the top time of the morning and tying the meet record, set by Jason Lezak in 2009.

He scratched finals and headed home to Northern California after the swim. But first, he sat down with SwimSwam’s Anne Lepesant to talk about his 50 and 100 free races at LA Invite, Mare Nostrum, the lead-up to Nationals, and his weight loss during taper.

The coach in me was like “stop video-bombing Nathan Adrian and warm up!” when those guys were goofing around behind him, but let’s be honest, I’d probably be doing the same thing if I were there.

Is it just me or does Nathan look leaner than usual?

It bodes well for his 100 I think. He’s due to swim a PB in 100 this summer.

Totally feel the same ! he will bring very fast times in August ! The Aussies haven’t won the 100 free yet .

Interesting to hear he gauges how he swims some 100s based off the field. Probably more of a thing you’d do for a quick-turnaround series like Mare Nostrum, but still pretty interesting.

(I always assume guys mostly just swim their race, but I suppose prelims offers you a bit more room to play around given the level of competition.)

Nathan is a true professional. I get the impression than every aspect of his swimming performances is analyzed and every avenue toward shaving off time is explored. And he’s right – the number of factors that can affect a swimmer on any given day is huge, so sometimes you just have to do what has worked for you in the past and hope for the best! But this, “I lose 10 lbs during taper and I don’t know why” thing is a head scratcher to me. Even if he WANTS to lose 10 lbs he should have an understanding of what is causing the weight loss in my opinion.

more relaxed moments in tapered period is what i feel cause the loss of weight . I might very well be wrong but why not ? the wental climate determines many aspects of our lives .
