Van Beilen looks to sweep breaststroke events on final night of Zajac

UBC Dolphins’ Tera Van Beilen and Noemie Thomas along with Ryan Lochte and Sinead Russell will be looking to add to their win totals on the final night of Mel Zajac Jr. International.

Van Beilen will once again battle the University of Calgary’s Fiona Doyle for the top spot in the women’s 50 breaststroke. Van Beilen and Doyle have gone head to head in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events in the first two days of competition with Van Beilen has getting the best of Doyle in both.

Doyle qualified first in the 50 breaststroke posting a time of 32.51 followed by Tianna Rissling who qualified second recording a time of 32.54. Van Belien qualified third in a time of 33.60.

After winning the 100 buttefly last night Noemie Thomas looks to come away with another victory in the 200 butterfly. Thomas will be heading into the final with the fastest qualifying time of 2:16.59. She is followed by 15 year old Emily Overholt of the West Vancouver Otters Swim Club who posted a time of 2:18.89 and Haley Black of the Prince George Barracudas who qualified third in a time of 2:20.10.

Ryan Lochte has collected wins in the 200 backstroke, 200 freestyle and 200 IM, will be looking to collect two more in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Lochte goes into the 100 freestyle with the fastest qualifying time of 51.77. UBC Dolphin’s Tommy Gossland qualified second in a time of 51.91 with Cascade’s Joel Greenshields qualifying third in a time of 52.02.

In the 100 backstroke the University of Calgary’s Gleb Suvurov, who surprised most in the building last night by beating Lochte in the 50 backstroke, was the fastest qualifier posting a time of 56.66. Cascade’s Russell Wood qualified second in a time of 56.76 followed by Lochte who recorded a 57.16.

Sinead Russell, who won the the 200 backstroke on the first night of competition, will contend for the both the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle titles. Russell qualified first in the 100 backstroke posting a time of 1:01.13 and qualified second in the 100 freestyle a time of 56.90.

Natalie Hinds had the fastest qualifying time in the 100 freestyle recording a time of 55.90.
