The Rowland High girls and Emery High boys came away with 3A state titles on Thursday, February 8th. The Rowland girls won 3 of 11 events, while the Emery boys took 4 of 11.

Hadlee Begay picked up a pair of wins, coming in the girls 100 fly and 500 free. Begay, a freshman, took the 100 fly with a 59.59, winning by nearly 3 seconds. She went on to win the 500 by 8 seconds over fellow freshman, Kylie Hanson, 5:18.85 to 5:26.88.

Drew Roper also picked up 2 individual wins, taking both the 100 free and 100 back by pretty big margins. Roper won the 100 free with a 55.13, nearly 2 seconds ahead of runner-up Hailey Grandy. Roper went on to win the 100 back by over 3 seconds, posting a 59.49 to runner-up Ella Vitek’s 1:02.89.

Savannah Thomas also won 2 girls events, taking the 200 IM with a 2:16.84, and posting the fastest fly, back, and breast splits in the field. She also won the 100 breast by over 6 seconds, posting a 1:09.00 to runner-up Hayley Guymon’s 1:15.20.

Tony Puertas threw down wins in the boys 200 IM and 100 fly, going the fastest time from all 4 Utah state meets this season combined in both. Puertas went 1:54.58 in the IM, winning the event by 20 seconds. In the 100 fly, he went 49.91, which won the event by over 6 seconds, and would have been good enough to win the 100 free at this meet. The 100 free was won by Keldan Guymon (50.99), who also won the 50 free with a 22.67.

Braxton Pierce was a dual event winner as well, taking the boys 200 and 500 free. Pierce went 1:49.11 to win the 200 free in a tight race with Johan Boer, who finished in 1:49.82. Pierce took his 1st 50 out in 24.85 to Boer’s 25.61, then held his lead steady as their final 3 50s were all within .02 seconds of each other. Pierce also won the 500, going a 5:07 to win the event by 15 seconds.
