USC Wins 10 of 16 Events in Men’s Pac-12 Dual Meet with Arizona

The USC Trojans hosted the Arizona Wildcats for a Pac-12 dual meet last Saturday at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center. USC came away with victories in both the men’s and women’s teams. This post only features the men’s meet recap. For our women’s meet recap, click here.

MEN’S RECAP

Though Arizona lost the meet, they got off to a hot start, winning the 200 medley relay. Billy Oates (22.57), Ryan Foote (24.44), Seth Miller (20.84), and Tai Combs (19.96) teamed up for a 1:27.81, holding off a late charge by USC. Notably, USC anchor Artem Selin was flying on his relay, splitting a sizzling 19.08.

The Wildcats kept the momentum rolling, taking the first individual event, the 1000 free, as well. Beck Parnham won the race, swimming a 9:23.89.

The Trojans then punched back with a 1-2 finish in the 200 free, led by Max Saunders. After flipping 0.01 seconds ahead of teammate Paul Retterer at the 100 turn, Saunders pulled ahead on the third 50. He carried that momentum into the finish, touching first in 1:37.44, just ahead of Retterer’s 1:38.03.

Retterer then went on to win the 500 free, swimming a 4:29.85. He beat out Parnham, who came in second with a 4:33.27.

Chris O’Grady was great for USC, winning all three of his individual events. He kicked things off with a 53.94 in the 100 breast, getting out to the early lead, splitting 25.23 on the first 50. The Trojans posted a 1-2 finish in the event, as Ben Dillard came in second at 54.52.

O’Grady would go on to lead a 1-2-3 charge by the Trojans in the 200 breast, touching in 1:57.61. He was phenomenal on the back half of the race. After splitting 30.97 on the second 50, O’Grady went 29.56 and 29.99 on the final two 50s, for a 59.55 on the second 100. Dillard again came in second, swimming a 1:59.58, while Henry Blaul finished third with a 2:00.86.

O’Grady capped his meet off by winning the 200 IM in 1:48.50, this time narrowly touching out Dillard (1:48.56). He was fantastic on the breast leg, splitting 29.73.

USC’s Evangelos Makrygiannis swept the backstroke events, beginning with a 48.23 in the 100 back. He split the race tightly, going out in 23.73 and coming home in 24.5o, taking the lead on the back half. Makrygiannis then went on to swim a 1:47.95 for victory in the 200 back.

Trojan Artem Selin was dominant in the 50 free, swimming a 19.65. Arizona freshman Tommy Palmer would beat out Selin in the 100 free, clocking a 44.46 to Selin’s 44.50.

Arizona freshman Haakon Naughton took the 200 fly in 1:46.25, establishing an early lead and holding on through the back half.

Arizona also picked up a win in the 200 free relay, swimming a 1:19.46. Marin Ercegovic (20.27), Seth Miller (19.92), Tommy Palmer (19.76), and Tai Combs (19.51) combined to give the Wildcats the win.
