USA Women’s Water Polo Open With 10-5 Win Over China

The USA Women’s National Team opened up their four-game exhibition series with a 10-5 win over China earlier tonight at UC Irvine. Paige Hauschild (Santa Barbara, CA/USC/Santa Barbara 805) scored two goals to lead a balanced attack featuring nine different goal scorers. Gabby Stone (La Jolla, CA/Stanford/SD Shores) and Amanda Longan (Moorpark, CA/USC/Santa Barbara 805) combined for 11 saves in net. Team USA returns to action on Saturday against the Netherlands at Santa Margarita Catholic High School at 6pm pt. Tickets are available at the door only, $10 for general admission and free admission for children 10 & under. The match was a low scoring affair to start with the match even at 1-1 after the opening eight minutes. Team USA took control in the second quarter holding China scoreless while adding goals from Ryann Neushul (Isla Vista, CA/Dos Pueblos HS/Santa Barbara 805), Aria Fischer (Laguna Beach, CA/Stanford/SET) and Hauschild for a 4-1 lead at halftime. China scored to open the third quarter only to see the United States run off four straight goals capped by a Denise Mammolito (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/USC/CHAWP) score with 1:31 left in the third.Melissa Seidemann (Walnut Creek, CA/Stanford/NYAC) and Alys Williams (Huntington Beach, CA/UCLA/Huntington Beach WP) added goals in the fourth to give the United States a 10-3 advantage. China added two late goals that would not factor in the decision. Team USA went 1/4 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty while China was 0/4 on power plays and 0/1 on penalty shots.
