For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Brynn Sundell of Middleton, Wisconsin has announced her commitment to swim and study at the University of Wisconsin, starting in the fall of 2027. She trains year-round with Madison Aquatic Club and attends Middleton High School.

Sundell announced the news on Instagram, writing:

I am incredibly excited and thankful to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison! I’d first like to thank my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for all the endless love and support. I appreciate each and every one of you. I would also like to share how grateful I am to Coach Jack and the entire UW coaching staff for this incredible opportunity to be a part of the team! GO BADGERS!!

The future Badger is a versatile swimmer who excels in the 100–1650 freestyles, butterfly, and IM. Sundell targeted two key meets during the 2024–25 season: the Wisconsin Senior Short Course Championships in February and the NCSA Spring Championships in March.

At the Senior Championships, she dominated the distance events, capturing gold in both the 1000 free (10:06.76) and 1650 free (16:57.58) after dropping 8.40 and 25.43 seconds, respectively. In the 200 fly, she clocked 2:04.13 in prelims before lowering her time to 2:03.11 to win the final, blowing away her 2:05.99 previous best. She went on to place third in the 400 IM (4:29.33) and fourth in the 500 free (4:56.54), improving by 4.94 and 9.72 seconds, before rounding out the meet with a seventh-place finish in the 100 fly (56.72).

Sundell carried her momentum into NCSAs, finishing 26th in the 50 fly (25.04), 29th in the 100 fly (55.62), and 34th in the 200 fly (2:03.06), setting personal bests in all three events. She also lowered her 400 IM to 4:23.73, more than five seconds faster than a month earlier, and improved her 200 IM to 2:06.27. In the 100 free, she broke 52 for the first time with a 51.67.

Heading into the 2024-25 campaign, her prior bests stood at 2:05.99 in the 200 fly, 10:15.16 in the 1000 free, 17:23.01 in the 1650 free, 4:34.27 in the 400 IM, 5:06.26 in the 500 free, 2:06.63 in the 200 IM, 52.70 in the 100 free, and 55.66 in the 100 fly.

Though it’s still early in the 2025–26 season, Sundell recently notched a lifetime best of 1:51.22 in the 200 free at the Blackshirt Invite, a narrow improvement over her previous mark of 1:51.41.

Top SCY Times:

  • 100 Freestyle: 51.67
  • 200 Freestyle: 1:51.22
  • 500 Freestyle: 4:56.54
  • 1650 Freestyle: 16:57.58
  • 100 Butterfly: 55.62
  • 200 Butterfly: 2:03.06
  • 200 IM: 2:03.53
  • 400 IM: 4:23.73

A Division I program in the Big Ten Conference, the Badger women placed fourth out of 14 teams at the 2025 conference meet before going on to finish 12th at the NCAA Championships. Dr. Jack Brown now leads the Wisconsin program, having taken over in May after seven-year head coach Yuri Suguiyama departed to become USA Swimming’s National Team Director and Coach.

The conference meet scores ‘A,’ ‘B,’ and ‘C’ finals, and it took times of 53.45 and 1:59.51 in the butterfly events, 1:59.66 and 4:14.72 in the IMs, and 49.60, 1:47.11, 4:46.00, and 16:32.23 in the freestyle events to make the top 24 and score in 2025. While Sundell’s bests are not in this range yet, she has two full years of training ahead before arriving on campus, and is on an upward trajectory.

According to last season’s team depth chart, Sundell’s 200 fly time would have ranked fourth, while her 100 fly and 400 IM would have situated her fifth. Her 1650 free would have slotted her sixth, and her 500 free best would have put her eighth. She would have been 10th in both the 100 free and 200 IM, and 11th in the 200 free.
