UMBC Hires Brandt Nigro as New Assistant Coach

Baltimore, Md.– Brandt Nigro joins the UMBC Swimming and Diving staff as an assistant coach for 2014-15, head coach Chad Cradock announced this week. Nigro comes to Baltimore from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut.

Nigro comes to Baltimore with a wealth of knowledge and training in swimming. Most recently, Nigro was the coach with the Cheshire YMCA Sea Dogs, where he was the Head Juniors Coach. He was responsible for all aspects of training and preparing for meets. While with Cheshire, he assisted with the Senior and National Teams.

“We are excited to have Brandt join our program. He brings a great deal of experience to the deck which will help us continue to grow,” said Cradock.

Brandt has experience in collegiate swimming and diving, having been a volunteer assistant coach with Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. At Wesleyan, Nigro assisted with team practices and dryland sessions, as well attending conference dual meets and conference championships. Nigro primarily worked with sprints.

In addition to college swimming, Brandt has coached at three separate high schools. Most recently he was the head coach at Brookfield High School in Connecticut, while also coaching at Joel Barlow/Immaculate High School, as well as Bristol Eastern High School.

“Brandt is exactly who we need in our program. I know our team will respond well to him and look forward to our future,” Cradock said.

A Newington, Conn. native, Nigro swam for one year at the University of Connecticut before transferring to the College of Charleston. There, he won a conference title as a member of the 200 and 400 Medley Relay teams. Nigro was also named to the Southern States All-Conference and All-Academic Teams.

Nigro graduated from College of Charleston with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 2005. He earned his Master’s in School Psychology from the University of Hartford in 2008.
