UMass Women Top Boston U For First Time Since 2013, Minutemen Complete Sweep

AMHERST, Mass.  The University of Massachusetts men’s swimming and diving team opened up their day in the pool by setting a new Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool record in the 200 Medley Relay on their way to a 196-95 win over Boston University on Saturday afternoon. Michael TartakovskyAl Madden, Will Munstermann and Ryan Pedrick clocked in a new pool record time of 1:31.59 as UMass picked up 15 points in the opening relay.

Emerson Kiefer followed the very next race by rallying to take the top-spot in the 1000 Free, coming from behind to clock in a time of 9:37.75 as the Minutemen also took third and fourth in the distance swim. Panagiotis Androulidakis grabbed another win for UMass right after in the 200 Free, tying for first with a time of 1:43.15.

UMass swept the top-three spots in both the 100 Back and 100 Fly, beginning with a Seamus Trzewik-Quinn winning swim of 51.54 in the 100 Back as Munstermann and Noah Witt rounded out the top-three. The freshman Witt went on to win the 200 Back later in the meet with a time of 1:52.16 while Trzewik-Quinn finished in second.

Munstermann set the pace in the 100 Fly sweep with a top-time of 50.96 to lead all Minutemen as Casey Ransford and Ethan Davey finished in second and third respectively. Munstermann added a win in the 100 Free, posting a time of 47.29 while Dias Konysbayev tied for second with a time of 47.80.

Jamie MacDonald won a pair of races for the Minutemen as the freshman started his day by taking the 200 Fly with a time of 1:52.38 followed by Ransford in third. MacDonald added his second win in the final individual race of the afternoon with a time of 1:56.35 in the 200 IM followed by Konysbayev in second.

Ryan Pedrick added a win for UMass in the 50 Free as the senior clocked in the top-swim if 21.24 while Tartakovsky finished as the runner-up. Al Madden led another one-two finish for UMass in the 100 Breast, leading the way with a time of 56.67 with Luther Gordon finishing in second.

On the diving side, Tommy Cotner took the 1-Meter Dive while Noah Kanner finished second before Kanner went on to win the 3-Meter Dive.

UMass will be away from the competition pool before returning to action on Nov. 22-24 at the Terrier Invitational while the divers will head to the WVU Invitational in Morgantown, W.V.

Boston U Men

AMHERST, Mass. – Returning to action at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool, the Boston University men’s swimming & diving team dropped a 196-95 decision Saturday at UMass.

Sarsen Whatmore continued to dominate the free events, winning the 500 (4:30.93) and tying for first in the 200 (1:43.15). Tommy Hagerty took second in the 1000 free (9:39.75) and followed Whatmore in the 500 free (4:43.73). Kyle Falkstrom picked up an individual victory for the second straight week, coming out on top in the 200 breast (2:09.02). BU finished strong as all three 200 free relay teams finished in the top three to close out the meet.

The Terriers will head home for a dual meet against Texas A&M on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 3:30 p.m.

UMass women

AMHERST, Mass.  The University of Massachusetts women’s swimming and diving swept both the 100 Back and 200 Fly on their way to their first win over Boston University since 2013 as they picked up a 164-135 win over the Terriers on Saturday at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool.

Meghan Gray led the sweep of the 100 Backstroke as the Minutewomen grabbed the top-three spots in a closely contested race. Gray’s time of 1:00.13 led the way followed by Sydnee Aubin in second with a swim of 1:00.16 and Kirsten Ardis in third with a time of 1:00.22.

Summer Pierce paced the Minutewomen in a 200 Fly sweep, clocking in a top-time of 2:10.39 followed by Jane Denenberg and Stephanie Judge in second and third respectively. Judge led the way for UMass in the 100 Fly as she took the runner-up spot followed by Pierce in third.

The Minutewomen got off to a strong start in the swimming events as they grabbed 15 points in the 200 Medley Relay, led by a time of 1:48.09 set by Ardis, Olivia Mozoki, Pierce and Kelsey Cordery. Cordery led the way for UMass in the 50 Free, posting a swim of 24.85 to finish second while Emily Rudiman and Mariam Labib finished in third and fourth.

Bella Snyder followed by posting a time of 10:33.27 to win the 1000 Free while Kelly Malyszka picked up a third-place finish to stretch the UMass lead. Chelsea Meiring’s time of 1:06.79 led the way three events later in the 100 Breaststroke while Mia Flagiello rounded out the top-three.

Maja Boric led the UMass divers with a pair of wins on the board, scoring 286.50 in the 1-Meter Dive to win while also taking the top-spot in the 3-Meter Dive while Maddie Doyle finished in second after adding a third-place showing in the 1-Meter.

Olga Egkorova added a pair of runner-up swims for the Minutewomen, picking up a second-place finish in the 200 Free with a time of 1:56.13 before going on to finish second in the 500 Free followed by Snyder in third. Malyszka secured a second-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.77 while Mozoki’s time of 2:27.89 in the 200 Breaststroke helped her to a runner-up showing.

The Minutewomen will be back in action next weekend on Nov. 9 as they travel to Kingston, R.I. to take on Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 meet at noon.

Boston U Women

AMHERST, Mass. – Taking on UMass on Saturday at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool, the Boston University women’s swimming & diving was narrowed by the Minutewomen,164-135.

Sydney LeeKara Lydzinski and Carly Soares each won a pair of events. Lee pick up wins in the 100 (52.97) and 500 free (5:06.20), Lydzinski took first place in the 50 free (24.75) and 100 fly (58.52), while Soares earned the top spot in the 200 breast (2:22.65) and 200 IM (2:08.05). Marie Alameida also tabbed an individual win, taking the 200 back (2:09.09).

BU will remain on the road as it makes the short trip to Northeastern on Thursday, Nov. 7 for a 6:30 p.m. dual meet.
