UCSD Triton Women Top Crosstown Rival San Diego To Conclude Regular Season

SAN DIEGO – The UC San Diego women’s swim squad headed across town on Saturday afternoon to dual the University of San Diego Toreros where the Tritons came out on top with a final result of 162 to 90.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons took 11 of the 14 events at the meet, they began the day with a victory from Valerie Yue in the 100 yard backstroke. Yue posted a time of 56.33 to take first with teammate Alana Barthel taking second with a time of 58.24. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Miranda Renner took first place with a time of 1:04.56. Taking the one and two spots in the 100 yard butterfly, Sanne Dequine and Minh-Nha Kawamura posted times of 55.58 and 56.38, respectively.  Swimming the 200 yard freestlye, Juli Arzave led the Tritons to a one-two-three finish with Sophie Francis taking second and Sophia Bell taking third.

In the 50 yard freestyle, Josette OdgersFrancesca Falzon Young, and Mackenzie Lee swept the podium, all finishing within 0.01 of each other with Falzon Young and Lee tying. Another sweep came in the 100 yard IM with Katja Pavicevic leading Emma Keith-Brown and Chloe Braun. Yue posted another victory in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.02 followed by Sandy Li and Sophia BellAneta Wyzga won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 52.81 with Lee and Falzon taking third and fourth. Sweeping the 200 yard backstroke, Barthel led with a time of 2:03.63 and Jordan Phillips followed with Kawamura taking third.

In the one meter dive prelims, Isabella Perez finished second with a score of 228.23, and then won the finals with a score of 241.13. The final victory for the gold and blue was another Triton sweep which came in the 500 yard freestyle led by Keith-Brown with a time of 5:06.71. She was followed by Audrey Moore and Gabi Icheva.

QUOTABLE
“We had a successful day and ended it with a sweep against another in-conference institution,” commented head coach Marko Djordjevic. “It was an opportunity for us to try some different events and strategies to test our roster depth going into our conference championship and we got some amazing performances and great results.”

The men’s team made the trip across town to support the women, “and they created great supportive atmosphere which shows overall strength of our program as team. And I know we are all looking forward to racing at the conference championships,” Djordjevic added.

UP NEXT
The UC San Diego swim teams will head to St. George, Utah as the women look to defend their title as conference champs. The MPSF conference championships will take place Feb. 15 thru Feb. 18 hosted by Utah Tech University. The diving teams will all compete in Mission Viejo, Calif during the same dates.

SAN DIEGO — Led by first-places finishes from sophomore Jane Riehs and freshman Penelope Leonard, and a win in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, San Diego swimming and diving competed against crosstown opponent UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Tritons by a 162-90 margin at the USD Sports Center Pool.

The meet marked the Toreros’ senior day, with Sam EasonElena ElieParker HenryRachel HubkaCallie JohnsonGracie MarshallMegan Ross, and Mia Shaeffer honored prior to the event.

The Toreros are back in action on Wednesday, February 15 when they begin competition in the MPSF Championships in St. George Utah.
