UCLA hosted Cal for a women’s dual meet on Saturday at the Spieker Aquatics Center. Cal walked away victorious, beating UCLA in a 179-120 decision. It was UCLA’s second dual meet of the weekend, as they had hosted Stanford for an abbreviated format dual meet the day before.
While Cal won the meet, perhaps the biggest swim of the day came when UCLA’s Rosie Murphy set a new Bruins program record in the 200 back. Murphy put up a dominant performance in the race, swimming a 1:51.59 to beat the field by 6 seconds. Additionally, she took down her own UCLA school record mark, which had stood at 1:52.39 from a dual meet back in the fall.
Murphy was also excellent in the 200 IM, which she won in a time of 1:55.18. That was nearly another career best for Murphy, coming in just off her personal mark of 1:54.89, which she swam at the Ohio State Invite back in November.
Although she didn’t win the event, Murphy swam a new personal best in the 200 free, where she finished 2nd in 1:45.85. It was an incredibly close race, as Cal’s Lilou Ressencourt touched 1st in 1:45.71.
Cal’s Mia West had a terrific swim on the day as well. West clocked a 50.78 en route to winning the 100 back by 1.5 seconds. That swim stands as a new career best for West. She then went on to win the 500 free in 4:39.75, which is yet another career best.
Kathryn Hazle was another Cal swimmer to win a pair of events on the day, and an unusual pair of events at that. Hazle first won the 1000 free in 9:52.56, touching first by a whopping 18 seconds. She then went on to win the 200 breast in 2:11.63. She narrowly touched out teammate Abigail Herscu, who was 2nd with a 2:11.65.
Cal’s Annie Jia swept the fly events on the day. Jia kicked things off with a 1:57.09 in the 200 fly. That performance was a very good one for her, coming in within a second of her career best of 1:56.12. Jia then went on and clocked a 51.66 in the 100 fly.
Cal swept the relays on the day as well. In the 200 medley relay Mary-Ambre Moluh, Silje Slyngstadli, Jia, and Sydney Griscavage teamed up for the Golden Bears, winning the race in 1:35.38. We don’t have all the splits for this Cal relay, but we do know that Jia split 23.15, and Griscavage was 21.65.
The Golden Bears came out on top again in the 200 free relay, where Moluh (22.33), West (21.70), Jia (22.28), and Griscavage (21.86) combined for a 1:28.17.

50.7 for Mia West feels out of no where and is the swim of the meet.
Obviously a 1:54/4:04 IMer is going to good at a lot of things, but it was only her second 100 yard backstroke and she was 56 in the other one at the Cal Poly (RIP) queen of the pool meet. Her IM splits and LC times stands out much more for fly than back as well.
I’m curious now, what would even be her event lineup for NCAAs?
