LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 10 UC San Diego women’s water polo fought to come back from an early deficit against No. 7 UCI but ultimately fell 12-9 at Canyonview Aquatic Center. The Tritons are 9-6 and 3-2 in Big West Action while the Anteaters improve to 10-7 and 2-2 in Big West Action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UCI’s Piper Smith went on a 3-0 run in the first quarter to give the Anteaters the early lead. After a UC San Diego time out, The Tritons got on the board with a goal from Tera Richardson. The Anteaters scored within the final 30 seconds to reclaim a three-goal lead.

The Anteaters outscored the Tritons 4-2 in the second frame. Goals from Annika Arroyo and Grace Pevehouse kept the game close, but a 2-0 run in the final three minutes of the quarter gave the Anteaters an 8-3 lead.

UCI opened the third quarter with back-to-back goals to take their largest lead of the day. Arroyo and Holly Maine scored in the third for the Tritons to make it a six-goal deficit with one more quarter to go.

Down 11-5 to open the fourth, the Tritons did not give in. Jessee Ransone scored with 6:09 left and Ciara Franke scored on back-to-back power plays. The offense was not able to work fast enough to make up the deficit and the Anteaters came up with the win.
