For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Two-time Georgia high school state champion Cannon Martenson is headed to New Haven to compete for Yale starting in the fall of 2026. He made the announcement on Instagram, writing:
I am super excited to announce my commitment to the admissions process at Yale University to continue my academic and swimming career. Huge thanks to my family, coaches, and teammates for supporting me. I am especially grateful to the coaches at Yale for this incredible opportunity. Go Bulldogs!! #boolaboola
The Atlanta, Georgia native is in the midst of his senior year at Marist School, where he has competed on the varsity team since his freshman year. Martenson also swims year-round with Dynamo Swim Club, primarily specializing in sprint freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly.
Over the past 12 months, Martenson has improved across his event lineup, dropping from 20.54 to 20.35 in the 50 free, 45.25 to 44.73 in the 100 free, 1:38.60 to 1:38.35 in the 200 free, 50.19 to 49.53 in the 100 back, 1:50.26 to 1:48.32 in the 200 back, and 50.82 to 49.41 in the 100 fly. All of his current personal bests were set at the Speedo Premier meet last March.
A four-time qualifier for the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) 6A State meet, he is the reigning state champion in both the 50 (20.76) and 100 free (44.73). Throughout his high school career, he has also contributed in off-events, progressing from a fifth-place finish in the 100 breast as a freshman to runner-up as a sophomore. He also earned back-to-back runner-up finishes in the 200 IM during those two years. His personal bests in those off-events stand at 1:51.50 in the 200 IM and 56.99 in the 100 breast.
Martenson is a two-time Winter Juniors qualifier. In 2024, he placed 64th in the 50 free (20.84), 80th in the 200 free (1:41.02), and 106th in the 200 back (1:52.32). Last month, he improved across the board, finishing 44th in the 50 free (20.61), 35th in the 100 free (45.12), 51st in the 200 free (1:39.68), and 99th in the 100 back (51.35).
Top SCY Times:
- 50 Freestyle: 20.35
- 100 Freestyle: 44.73
- 200 Freestyle: 1:38.35
- 100 Backstroke: 49.53
- 200 Backstroke: 1:48.32
- 100 Butterfly: 49.41
Yale, a Division I swimming program competing in the Ivy League, is led by head coach Jim Henry, who is entering his 14th year at the helm. The men finished third out of eight teams at 2025 conference championship.
Martenson is poised to make an immediate impact at the conference level, as his personal best times in the 200 free and 200 back would have been quick enough to make the ‘C’ final last season. He’s within range in his other events as well, where 20.12 and 44.19 were needed in the freestyle events, and 48.72 and 49.20 were required in the 100 back and 100 fly.
On the team’s 2024-25 depth charts, Martenson would have ranked sixth in the backstrokes and 100 fly, seventh in the 200 free, eighth in the 50 free, and ninth in the 100 free. His versatility will make him a valuable dual-meet option, and with continued improvement, he could become a mainstay on the Bulldogs’ free relays over the next few years.
Martenson joins Louis Joos (breast/IM), Burak Iloglu (distance free), Ethan Wang (breast/distance free), and Justin Cvetkov (sprint free) in committing to Yale’s Class of 2030.
*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
