Ralf Tribuntsov and Daniel Zaitsev set an Estonian Record each on the first day of racing in Lublin, as Eneli Jefimova came within a whisker of adding a third in the women’s 100 breast.
Tribuntsov kicked off the party, leading off the men’s 4x50m heats relay in a fantastic 20.77. That knocked three-tenths off his own record from less than three weeks ago, and marks the third time he has lowered the standard this fall. He first broke the mark at the World Cup in Carmel clocking 21.23, before lowering that to 21.08 and the Estonian Junior Championships.
The former USC swimmer has been on a tear already this fall with national records in the 50 free, 50 back and 100 back so far. With his time of 20.77 ranking him as the 16th-fastest European in history and faster than the #1 seed for the individual event (Maxime Grousset in 20.78), he may well be a medal favourite later in the meet.
He ranked as the #5 swimmer in the world this season, but dropped to #6 after Jere Hribar’s 20.70 leadoff this evening.
