Tom Chambers Named CEO of 2016 European Aquatics Championships

Tom Chambers has been appointed Chief Executive of the 33rd LEN European Swimming Championships and the LEN European Masters Championships which take place at the London Aquatics Centre in 2016.

Chambers’ most recent position was as general manager in sport operation for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow which saw him lead the delivery across the 17 sports. This included managing 261 medal ceremonies, procurement of 300,000 items of sport equipment from suppliers and the sport presentation for all venues.

Previous roles saw Chambers manage the delivery of Scotland’s second year of homecoming as the homecoming director for Event Scotland and working for five years as major projects development manager for Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. He also has vast experience of sports governing bodies with his role as non-executive director for British Triathlon Federation, a post he held from 2007 to 2012.

Chambers commented: “This role offers a great opportunity to work on a world class event within an Olympic and Paralympic venue and to work with a governing body such as British Swimming which is preparing to host back-to-back European Championships.

“From a personal perspective, on the back of my work at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and my career in sport, working on another world class event was something that really motivated me.

“It will be great to lead the first major multi-sport event to be hosted at the London Aquatics Centre after the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. For me making sure that this event provides the best possible environment for the teams in preparing them on the road to Rio and Tokyo is a key aim.

“There was a great legacy after London but I want to build on that further with the LEN European Championships showing what swimming and the aquatic disciplines can do, and the edition of the European Masters Championships will help in expanding the reach of the sport.”

British Swimming Chairman Maurice Watkins commented: “We are delighted Tom has joined the team after his contribution to the successful Commonwealth Games in Glasgow where he played a key role.

“His experience will ensure we deliver a strong Championship in London in 2016 and build a legacy for the Glasgow 2018 European Championships.”

The 33rd LEN European Swimming Championships will see the continent’s best swimmers, divers and synchronised swimmers compete as they take a major step towards the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. It forms part of UK Sport’s Gold Event Series a National Lottery funded campaign to bring world class sporting events to the UK.

During the competition, the London Aquatics Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will play host to up to 1,000 athletes.
