Teenager Ikee Leads Japan With 2 World C’ships Qualifying Times

JAPAN SWIM 2017 (JAPANESE NATIONALS)

Although 3 national records fell on day 2 of the Japan Swim, the meet which serves as the nation’s World Championships trials, the session had a slightly subdued feel on the whole. The first 3 events brought consecutive national records in the men’s and women’s 50m breaststroke races, followed by a stellar women’s 400m IM race, but things fell off from that point onward.

Recently-turn-pro Kosuke Hagino failed to notch a JPN-mandated time in the 200m freestyle, while the women’s 100m backstroke also was void of qualifiers. Just one backstroker on the men’s side, Ryosuke Irie, made the 100m cut, while last year’s bronze medalist and current 50m back national record holder finished out of the final.

All told, Japan still raced its way to 6 Japanese QT on day 2 with marks as follows:

Day 2 Swimmers under Japanese QT:

Women’s 50 Breaststroke –

Men’s 50 Breaststroke –

  • Yasuhiro Koseki – 27.23 *NR, *QT

Women’s 400 IM –

  • Yui Ohhashi- 4:31.42 *NR, *QT
  • Sakiko Shimizu – 4:37.52 *QT

Women’s 200 Freestyle –

Men’s 100 Backstroke –

Was this compared to FINA A cuts or the Japanese cuts?

How many individual events will Ikee swim in Budapest? She could qualify for 6 by my count (50/100 free and fly, 200 free, 200 IM).

To answer my own question it looks like Ikee has not entered the 200 medley, an event where she holds the current World Junior Record.

While Ikee has a great IM time, the women’s 200IM in Japan is stacked. They hold 4 out of the top 5 top times in the world this year. and are all within about a half-second. If Ikee swam it, there is definitely no guarantee she would qualify. She probably wants to focus on other events.

After that 400 IM, i’m really interested to see if Ohhashi will take Watanabe’s NR in the 200 IM. Japan is going to have a crazy good team in Tokyo.
