On the opening night of the NCAA Division II Championships, The University of Tampa men broke their own NCAA Division II and Championship Record in the 800 freestyle relay, as the quartet of Barnabas Fluck, Joshua Noll, Jacob Hamlin, and Nicholas Cavic combined for a blistering 6:16.64, swimming nearly a second and a half faster than they went to secure the event win and records last year in 6:17.93.
Both Tampa and Drury were under that previous record, with Tampa overtaking Drury on the 3rd leg and holding on until a late push from Drury. Tampa’s anchor in Cavic (1:33.14), despite being out-split on the final leg by Drury’s Joao Nogueira (1:32.85), was able to find another gear on the final 50 to get his hand on the wall first and earn a key relay win for Tampa.
This event win for Tampa marks their 3rd consecutive win in this race, having not been beaten at the NCAA Division II Championships since being bested by McKendree in 2023, when Tampa was out-touched by six hundredths of a second.
