The Villanova University Wildcats have received a commitment from Nick Spina, who swims with SwimMAC Carolina and Ardrey Kell High School.

“Villanova provides the mixture of outstanding academics and great athletics that I was looking for. I am thrilled to swim for Villanova next year and cannot wait to become a Wildcat!”

Swimming for Ardrey Kell at the 2015 NCHSAA 4A State Championships, Spina placed 13th in the 100 free, 20th in the 100 breast, and contributed to the school’s third-place medley relay and fourth-place 200 free relay. During long course season, Spina represented SwimMAC at the North Carolina Long Course Senior Championships. He was a bonus finalist in the 50 free and 100/200 breaststokes; he also competed in the 100/200 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM. Spina’s best times are:

  SCY LCM
50 free 21.77 24.91
100 free 47.80
100 breast 59.69 1:09.94
200 breast 2:12.09
200 IM 1:59.64

In addition, he has split 21.20 SCY on a relay.

Spina didn’t begin swimming until the 8th grade. He was influenced to compete for a club team by Texas A&M swimmer, Connor Long. Once he started, though, he took it seriously. In addition to what he has achieved individually, Spina has contributed to three NCHSAA 4A medalist relays (200 medley and 200 free in 2015 and 200 free in 2014), and he has earned All-American honors as part of Ardrey Kell’s 2015 200 medley relay.
