Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

AJ Abram, a junior at Waukee Northwest High School, has verbally committed to the University of Kentucky.

I am extremely excited to announce that I will be furthering my academic and athletic career at the University of Kentucky. A very big Thank You to my family, friends, coaches, and teammates that have helped me get to where I am today. And with that, GO CATS!

At the 2021 Iowa High School State Swimming Meet, Abram placed third in the 100 and 200 free. His freshman year, he placed third in the 200 and fourth in the 100. He also swims club for the DSMY Marlins. At the 2021 West Speedo Winter Juniors, he placed 18th in the 200 free.

Abram has a Summer Juniors cut in the LCM 200 free, a Winter Juniors cut in the LCM 100 free and SCY 100 free, a Winter US Open cut in the SCY 200 free, and USA Swimming Futures cuts in the LCM 50 free and SCY 500 free.

His best short-course yards times are:

  • 50 free: 20.81
  • 100 free: 44.92
  • 200 free: 1:37.96
  • 500 free: 4:32.47
  • 1650 free: 16:55.56

Kentucky is a member of the Southeastern Conference. At the 2021 SEC men’s championships, Kentucky placed seventh out of 10 teams. The 200 free, arguably Abram’s best event, was a particularly strong race for Kentucky at the 2021 conference, where the team scored 42 points compared to 0 in the other sprint freestyle events.

If Abram had competed in this season, he’d rank third in the 50 and 100 free and fourth in the 200 free among current Kentucky swimmers. Currently, swimmers ahead of him include freshmen Nicholas Caruso and Victor Martin Roig, as well as sophomore Max Berg, the fastest sprint freestyler on the team. All three will likely still be on the team when Abram joins in 2023.

Abram joins Lance Johnson and Isaac Fleig for the class of 2023. The women’s team has substantially more commitments at six.
