Sprint News 8/29/12: McGregory Expecting; West Florida Hires First Coach

…Former American swimming superstar Hayley McGregory revealed this week that she and husband Justin Mortimer, himself a former professional swimmer, are expecting their first child. McGregory is a former World Record holder  in the 50 and 100 backstrokes, and finished third at the Olympic Trials four times in her career (100/200 back in 2004/2008). She is currently the head coach of the Circle C Select Team in Austin, Texas…

…West Florida has announced Andrew Hancock as their first ever head coach of the women’s swimming and diving team, which will begin competition a year from now in the fall of 2013. The school, located in the tourist hotbed of Pensacola, competes at the Division II level. He has been the assistant coach at Division I school Cleveland State, his alma mater, for the past four seasons, and in 2011 was identified by CollegeSwimming.com as a finalist for Assistant Coach of the Year. West Florida is a state school, but has a very private-school feel (relatively small class sizes). It still maintains very reasonable tuition though, hovering around $5,500 per semester for tuition and fees in state. That, combined with a great location, a relatively well-known coach, and a very good facility, this team coud get very good at the Division II level in a hurry…

…Florida has confirmed the return of South African Olympian Sebastien Rousseau to their college roster this coming season. It was widely expected for him to return for a senior season after redshirting last year, but in an interview with Gregg Troy today on the team’s official website, it was confirmed. Rousseau is a specialist of the 200 yard events, and in 2011 placed 7th in the 200 fly and 200 free, as well as 10th in the 200 IM, for 31 individual points. Along with Ohio State’s Tim Phillips, he’s one of two major returns from Olympic redshirts on the men’s NCAA side this season…

…In other college coaching announcements, Truman State has hired Jessica Hessel, a former DII National Champion, as their new top assistant. She comes after spending a year as a graduate assistant at D-II power Henderson State. Also, Idaho has hired Scott Cameron, who has served as a volunteer assistant with the Michigan women and in a paid role with Club Wolverine….
