VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota traveled to St. Paul, Minn. to compete in the Tommie Invitational to finish out their fall season. Twelve athletes advanced from the preliminary round to the A finals and five athletes were individual champions, including Nick Rounds and Alex Parkinson who broke school records with their wins.
The morning session started with the 500 free, where Emily DiProspero, Camilla Brogger-Andersen, and Quin Mahler-Moreno all advanced to the A finals for USD. DiProspero had the fastest time at 4:55.52. She later took some time off in the finals to win the event with a time of 4:54.05. Mahler-Moreno finished in second place while Brogger-Anderson got fourth.
For the men’s 500 free, Parkinson and Will Barth moved on to the A finals for the Yotes. Parkinson broke a school record with his time of 4:25.04 and would later swim a 4:22.87 to break his own record time and win the 500 free. Barth came in fourth.
In the 200 IM, Gabbie Ahrendt, Taylor Buhr, and Grace Schultz filled the top three in the preliminary race and earned their spots in the A final. In the finals, Ahrendt took first in 2:04.05 while Schultz took second and Buhr took third.
Brock Russell represented South Dakota in the 200 IM men’s finals where he came in second in both rounds. He first swam a 1:50.68, then a 1:49.27.
For the women’s 50 free, Henley Hatzung was USD’s A finalist. She swam a 23.65, and then a 23.32 to take second place.
The last preliminary race was the men’s 50 free where Rounds and David Mayer moved onto the finals. Rounds took first with a school record time of 19.43 while Mayer took second.
Maddox Mork was South Dakota’s top diver of the day as he won the three meter dive with a score of 303.50.
The women’s team had two relay wins on the day as well. The team of Hatzung, Lauren Eschmeyer, Chloe Miller, and Carson White won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:33.83. Hatzung, Buhr, Ahrendt, and DiProspero took the 400 Medley relay in 3:44.72.
The men’s team also swept the relays with a 1:20.30 200 free relay by Rounds, Jordan Hogue, Matthew Sorbe, and David Mayer and a 3:13.29 400 medley relay by Rounds, Ethan LaBounty, Dylan Alt, and Mayer. With Rounds’ 100 back leg of the relay, he broke another school record.
