SMU’s Mid-Season Addition Erasmus Wins 100 Fly in Win Over North Texas

The SMU Mustangs won all 11 swimming events on Friday against Metroplex opponents North Texas, and though the Mean Green took the two diving victories SMU took an overwhelming 141-96 victory, and even that was with several exhibition swims.

The SMU women swam a lot of primary events, but many of their top swimmers only used three of a possible four entries.

SMU senior Nina Rangelova took wins in both the 200 (1:49.96) and 500 (4:58.25) yard freestyles. Rangelova’s history is to swim pretty well in the first dual meet-or-two of the season, to swim really well at the last meet of the season, and to not do a whole lot in between, so those times are a lot better than they seem for the individual All-American candidate. Specifically, her 200, the best race she has in yards, is half-a-second faster than she was in January of 2013.

The biggest news coming out of this meet is the performance of a new mid-season freshman addition for SMU. Marne Erasmus, an 18-year old from South Africa, swam her 2nd career meet for the Mustangs and won the 100 fly in 55.67 – a new career best for her. She’ll battle Monika Babok for the spot on the A-medley relay (Babok was a 56.4 in the 100 fly here), and has the potential to take the All-American caliber SMU medleys to an even higher level. Babok held the spot on the Mustangs’ ‘A’ 200 medley for this meet at least.

North Texas’ two event wins both came from their diver Catherine Johnson, who won the 1-meter by 14 points and the 3-meter by a whopping 61 points.
