ROCHESTER, NY – Siena Swimming & Diving rebounded from a hard-fought loss in its home opener with a pair of road wins on Saturday afternoon. The Saints (3-1, 2-0) remained perfect in MAAC dual meet action with a 177-111 win over Canisius, and also collected a 198-101 victory over the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York.

The Green and Gold collected ten event wins, beginning with the group of freshman Mea Amedio, senior Audrey Shultzfreshman Camryn Raines, and graduate student Rory Kalac taking the win in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:50.49. Siena would also finish out the day with a relay win in the 200 free relay by way of the team of Raines, freshman Natalie Blume, junior Shaylea Triller, and Kalac swimming a time of 1:39.70.

Freshman Hope Ivanovich (10:48.29), freshman Maria Candelora (11:15.09), and Blume (11:18.98) went 1-2-3 in the 1,000 free, while Ivanovich also collected wins in the 200 fly (2:12.47) and the 500 free (5:22.58).

Kalac once again dominated sprint races with wins in the 50 (24.38) and 100 free (53.48), while Amedio took second in the 100 free (54.51) and the 200 IM (2:15.12). Shultz claimed victory in the 200 breast (2:26.57), while freshman Carsyn Ide won the 100 fly (1:00.28). Senior diver Talia Spenziero added depth with a first-place finish in the one-meter diving event (237.06).

Both of Siena’s MAAC victories have come against teams that were selected to finish ahead of them in the 2023-24 MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

Following a weekend off from competition, the Saints will next head to Loretto, Pennsylvania for annual dual meet action against Saint Francis (PA) on Saturday, November 4 before returning home to host New Hampshire at the Siena Swim Center the following day.

Marin de Villard took home four first-place finishes and established a pool record in the 200 back to help lead the Canisius men’s swimming and diving team to a 167-120 victory over the University of Rochester at the Speegle Wilbraham Center in Rochester, N.Y. Saturday.

Despite numerous first-place finishes for the women’s team, including a sweep from Brenna McLaughlinSaraJo Gardner and Jordan O’Connor in the 200 back, the Golden Griffin women fell to MAAC opponent Siena, 177-111. The women’s team did come up victorious against the Yellow Jackets, defeating them by a score of 173-111.

De Villard led the way for the men’s side, breaking the pool record in the 200 back with a time of 1:52.50. He also took first in the 200 free (1:43.13), 500 free (4:55.16) and alongside Bronson BenesSam Vidal and Alex Hiltbrand, took first in the 200 free relay (1:27.76).

Benes, Vidal and Hiltbrand took first in the 200 medley relay as well, alongside Elliot Somers, with a 1:36.37 time. Vidal and Benes both took home two more individual first-place finishes. Vidal won both the 100 (58.820) and 200 breast (2:11.74) while Benes won both the 100 (51.85) and 200 fly (1:56.71).

Ben Yant also had a quality day in the pool, taking first place in the 50 (22.01) and 100 free (49.26). Alongside Vidal in the 100 breast, Eric Kim (1:00.0) and Jeremy Cox (1:00.22) took second and third place, respectively, to complete the sweep.

On the women’s side, freshman Evie Leighton and McLaughlin continued their early-season dominance in the water. Leighton took first in the 200 free (1:56.47) and third in the 100 free (54.78). McLaughlin came in first in the 200 back with a time of 2:09.73.

Freshman Cassandra Ercoli picked up her first collegiate win in the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.83. Senior captain Jordan O’Connor earned another first place finish in the 100 back (1:00.07).

The Griffs kickoff their home meet schedule at the Burt Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo on Oct. 28, taking on SUNY Geneseo with the meet set to begin at noon.

University of Rochester women’s swimming and diving opened their 2023-24 season on Saturday afternoon with a home tri-meet against the NCAA Division I Canisius University Golden Griffins and the Siena College Saints at the Speegle-Wilbraham Center.

The ‘Jackets fell to both of their opponents, with the Golden Griffins picking up a 173-120 win over UR, as well as a 177-111 win over the Siena, while the Saints earned a 198-101 win over Rochester.

First-year Zuzu Bailey picked up the ‘Jackets’ lone individual win of the day, taking home first place in the three-meter dive. Bailey scored 229.72 to take first, with Lizzie Budde coming in second with a score of 226.19.

In the one-meter dive, Budde took second for UR, with a 226.72 score, while Bailey tallied another top-three result, finishing third with 206.63 points.

Overall, the Yellowjackets tallied 13 top-three results, including Bailey’s win and six second-place finishes.

Ariana Pasquella led Rochester with a pair of second-place finishes, touching the wall second in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.03) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:28.45). Gloria Ng finished just behind Pasquella in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing third with a 2:31.70 time, scoring a third-place result.

First-year Rachele Bachmann also added two top-three results, scoring UR’s highest finish in the 200-yard butterfly, clocking in at 2:17.29, good for second, while adding a third-place result in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.49).

Deniz Yardimci finished ahead of Bachmann in the 100-yard butterfly, scoring a second-place finish with her 1:00.98 time.

First-year Katherine Hegblom also added another third-place result to UR’s tally, scoring a top-three finish in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:16.24.

Rochester’s relay squads also added a pair of top-three results, in both the 200-yard medley and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Leah Tang, Ng, Yardimci and Saffron Chiu combined to come in third in the 200-yard medley, clocking in at 1:52.27. While the pairing of Alicia AlbuquerqueMarissa Carlson, Chiu and Yardimci clocked in at 1:42.89 in the 200-free relay, also good for third.

The Yellowjackets will next host SUNY Cortland for a dual meet on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. inside the Speegle-Wilbraham Center.
