Saskatchewan, Canada Record Holder Michael McGillivray Commits to Cal

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Canadian swimmer Michael McGillivray has verbally committed to Cal, where he is scheduled to begin with the varsity team in the fall of 2021. McGillivray, who swims for the Regina Optimist Dolphins under Abderrahmane Tissira, is one of the top young talents from the sparsely-populated central Canadian province of Saskatchewan. In total, he holds 16 Sasktachewan records, including 5 open-age records in the distance freestyle and sprint free events.

McGillivray comes from a big swimming family who all took slightly-different paths in their swimming. Older brother Scott swam at the University of Toronto before eventually making his way to the United States to train in San Diego with David Marsh’s Team Elite pro group. His older sister Megan just finished her college career at the University of Maine, while sister Catherine also swam in Canada at the home-town University of Regina.

Each new sibling that has matriculated to college swimming has ventured further from home, with Michael punctuating that by making the 1,600 mile trip from Regina to the Bay Area.

He also has a trio of cousins, Max, Quinn and Taylor, who all competed at the university level as well.

Unlike his older brother Scott, who is more of a sprint freestyler and breaststroke, Michael’s focus is on the middle-distance and distance freestyle races.

Canada’s current #1 middle-distance freestyler, Jeremy Bagshaw, is a graduate of Cal, the 2019 NCAA Champion in the 200 free Andrew Seliskar went to Cal, and the fastest-returning 500 yard freestyler from last year’s NCAA Championships Sean Grieshop also goes to Cal. That gives the program good pedigree for a swimmer like McGillivray.
