The nation of Malta hosted its 3rd Time Trial event at the Cottonera Sports Complex with two national records going down when all was said and done.
Racing in a timed final, Sasha Gatt established a new Maltese standard in the women’s 200m free, stopping the clock at a time of 1:59.86.
The 20-year-old two-time Olympian split 27.51/29.87/31.18/31.30 to rip her former personal best to shreds.
Entering this competition, Gatt’s career-swiftest and national record stood at the 2:02.13 she notched in November of last year. That means she hacked well over a second off her former benchmark to clear the 2:00 barrier for her first time ever.
This performance is on-trend for Gatt as she has experienced a breakthrough year.
She reached the final of the women’s 800m freestyle at this year’s U23 Swimming Championships, hitting a time of 8:49.00 to place 7th overall.
She also earned 400m free gold, 800m free gold and 1500m free at the 2025 Games of the Small States of Europe.
The other national record which was erased this month was the men’s 200m butterfly.
Nathan Cachia lowered his old mark of 2:02.39 from last month to a new PB of 2:01.15, continuing on his path to nearing the 2:00 threshold.
