Saint Louis Men And Evansville Women Take All At Butler Duals

Five teams attended the Butler Duals on Sunday to open their 2014-2015 season. Butler Women hosted multiple dual meets at the IUPUI Natatorium against Saint Louis University, University of Evansville, Valparaiso University, Western Illinois University, and Xavier University. Butler does not have a men’s swimming program, but hosted dual meets for the other men’s teams.

Saint Louis Men did not concede any swimming events and took the wins in all four of their dual meets. On the women’s side, Evansville beat all five of their opponents. Saint Louis Women were the closest to contesting the dominance of the Evansville Women, 137-101, while the Saint Louis Men were never threatened.

Saint Louis’s versatile Morgan Peterson was a serious threat to Evansville, winning the 400 I.M., 200 Fly, and 200 Breast. Evansville Women won both relays and used their depth to stay in control of the meet. Mid-distance specialist Michelle Tipton won the 200 and 500 Free for Evansville, while sprinter Danielle Freeman won the 50 and 100 Free to keep Saint Louis at bay. Without their two divers, Courtney Coverdale and Stephanie Tran, outscoring Saint Louis’s divers in both events, Evansville may have lost to Saint Louis.

Xavier’s Paxtyn Drew joined the party with Saint Louis and Evansville, winning the 200 Back. She was the only swimmer, outside of Evansville and Saint Louis, to win an event, besides the male divers from Western Illinois, Doug Ogilvie and Viktor Rusenas, who won the 1 Meter and 3 Meter diving events.

It was the Saint Louis show on the men’s side, as they took both relays and were relentless in the individual events. Brendan Hulseman won the 100 and 200 Free, as one of a few select individuals to win multiple events. The male version of Morgan Peterson was her versatile teammate Austin Nguyenphu, who would go on to win the 400 I.M., 200 Back, and 200 Breast for Saint Louis. Ryan McCoy would also join his teammates as a triple event winner, with what most swimmers would agree is a painful program, taking the 1000 Free, 200 Fly, and 500 Free.
