MILFORD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Swimming and Diving team swept Manhattan and Holy Cross today by final scores of 228-66 against Manhattan and 157-140 over Holy Cross. Meanwhile Holy Cross defeated Manhattan 223-61.

Junior Lauren Somers claimed wins in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle while freshman Taylor Eck placed first in the 100 and 200 backstroke and third in the 100 yard butterfly. Her times in each of the events were a season best as she tallied her first collegiate wins of her career.

In the men’s contests, Holy Cross would defeat Manhattan as well by a final score of 154-139.

The meet came down to the last relay against Holy Cross as the finish in the 100 butterfly was the turning point that pushed the Pioneers to the victory. The Pioneers placed first, second and third as Emily Peter, Nicole Tingley, and Taylor Eck were the three top finishers in the event. Prior to the 100 butterfly, SHU was down 10 points to Holy Cross but the finishes in the event pushed the Pioneers to the victory.

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women’s swimming and diving team defeated Manhattan College, 223-61, but fell to Sacred Heart University, 157-140, Saturday afternoon in Fairfield, Conn. The Crusaders won eight events on the day and broke a pool record in the medley relay.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Isabella Miko-Rydzaj, Caroline Body, Brianna Larnard, and Kayleigh Hoagland broke the pool record in the 400 medley relay by posting a 4:02.04 to take first place.
  • Miko-Rydzaj and Body both took home two individual first place finishes as well. Miko-Rydzaj won the 200 fly with a 2:09.79 and the 200 IM with a 2:14.11. Body claimed first in the 100 and 200 breast with a 1:09.79 and a 2:32.56 respectively.
  • Casey Sherman took first in the one-meter dives in both the five dive and six dive formats with scores of 159.85 and 239.60.
  • Leah Zogby was victorious in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:07.33.

Milford, CT – Manhattan Diving was active over the weekend, excelling in a pair of meets and setting records over that span.

Manhattan set personal bests and school records in the NYU Fall Invitational on Friday, highlighted by excellent performances from freshmen Lexington Passamonte (Rochester, NY / Greece Athena), Connor Marshall (West Hartford, CT / Avon Old Farms) and Tommy Courtney (Thornwood, NY / Archbishop Stepinac).

Passamonte continued to trailblaze women’s diving with a personal best and a new record in the three-meter with a score of 246.15 in the NYU Fall Invitational on Friday evening. She also shattered the four year-old one-meter record once held by Marylynn McMahon ’14, tallying a 228.15 in the event. She capped her weekend with a third-place showing on the three-meter board in the tri-meet against Sacred Heart and Holy Cross held on Saturday.

The men’s divers accomplished feats with their placing over the weekend. Marshall had two third-place finishes on Friday night, setting personal-highs in the one- and three-meter dives at 197.70 and 187.12, respectively. On Saturday, he took home first in both dives against the Crusaders’ Sam Devine.

Courtney was right behind Marshall in every event over the weekend, recording personal-best 182.33 and 159.83 in the one- and three-meter attempts on Friday and earning second place in his Saturday dives.

On Saturday, the men’s swimming team lost to Holy Cross by 15 points, while the women’s side fell to both the Crusaders and the Sacred Heart Pioneers.

The Jaspers turn their attention to Senior Day on Saturday, November 17 as Manhattan hosts Monmouth and Siena in a MAAC matchup at Fieldston High School. The Kelly Green and white will honors nine seniors that will graduate from the program following the 2018-19 season.

MEN’S SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior Timothy Valentine (Massapequa, NY / Chaminade) won the 100 Breast in 1:01.18 and the 200 Breast thanks to a season-best 2:17.38.
  • Sophomore Andre van Huyssteen (Paarl, South Africa / Paarl Boys) won gold in the 50 Free with a season-best time of 22.15 seconds.
  • Freshman Branden Deiss (Benoni, South Africa / Crawford College Lonehill) took home two individual titles in the 500 Free (4:53.64) and 1000 Free (personal-best 10:05.66)
  • Junior Tyler Dalton (East Stroudsburg, PA / Pocono Mountain East) was top-three in three different heats, most notabliy with his silver-madel mark in the 200 IM at 2:05.35.
  • van Huyssteen, Valentine, sophomores Derek Lederer (Blauvelt, NY / Tappan Zee) and Charles Ledda (New Fairfield, CT / New Fairfield) teamed up to win the 400 Medley Relay in 3:42.90.

WOMEN’S SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Freshman Sarah Hamilton was the top Jasper and the silver-medal recipient in the 1000 Free with her personal-best time at 1:14.43.
  • Junior Kelsey Eastman (Effort, PA / Wagner) collected third place with a 25.38-second time in the 50 Free.
  • Freshman Jamie Quinn (Fairfax, VA / WT Woodson), senior Morgan Fountain (Chesire, CT / Chesire), junior Klaudia Nagrabska (Belmont, MA / Belmont) and Eastman combined to record a third-place mark in the 400 Medley Relay in 4:14.98.
  • In the 200 Free Relay, Eastman, sophomore Miranda Gonzalez (Hicksville, NY / Sacred Heart Academy), Hamilton and junior Kali Nembach (Lynbrook, NY / Lynbrook) swam in 1:43.96 to finish third.
