Ryan Lochte, First Impressions Video

12 Gold Medal Mel Stewart | November 02nd, 2012 | Featured, International, News

Eleven-time Olympic medalist, Ryan Lochte, is out there, pitching, selling and generally enjoying his Olympic celebrity. It’s clear he’s enjoying himself, and he’s back in the pool prepping for the first USA Swimming Minneapolis Grand Prix. The swim fans and the swimming community as a whole has to be happy about that.

This latest ad is from advertising giant, TBWA/Chiat/Day, and I think it hits the mark, though, after showing it to friends, a few feel like it’s a little stilted. I think it works with the roses, silk robe and surf shorts. You be judge. Here’s the video:

    What in the hell..

I know bad acting, and that my friends, was not bad acting.
    Not bad at all.

    Terrible is what it was.

My theory about Lochte is that he tries so hard to come off as cool and laid back that he just ends up looking stilted and dumb. Just be yourself, man! If I’m wrong and that IS being yourself, then you’re in trouble….

On the other hand I have worked with Chiat Day many times on commercials before working on movies. When someone has do many, many, way too many takes, things get worse.
Agency creatives are some of the least creative people I’ve been around.
At a point it just has a negative affect. It as if he was being directed when to blink.

    The spot oozes overkill.

“can we get the first word from take 32B, the next 3 words from take 51c, then can we split the next word with parts of both 81A and 1A? we really like the hard K sound at the end of 81A but the beginning of 1A really ends up nicely… How about we do one more take but this time when you read your lines just throw them away”

    True story

At a certain point it gets to be like the actor has taken acid and has lost their mouth.

So good for you Lochte, didn’t me to crap in your salad.

Why doesn’t he swim in the world cup? This competition has a big lack of great swimmers and the overall level is average. He’s so good in short course. He could earn many dollars too.

Bobo. It would be great to see him at the World Cup events but the winnings are really only a few thousand at a time not too mention the money it costs to travel the world. He can do much better at home making commercials and appearances. The incentive really does not seem to be there for the super star swimmers yet,

Stop hating Ryan! What’s your problem with this guy? He’s an Olympic gold medalist and a great athlete so respect him!

I’m baffled by the negative comments. Sadly, when swimming has someone with personality, someone different from the norm — who doesn’t say or do the some thing from the cookie cutter Olympic mold — they get criticized…. Lochte never claimed to be genius, and he didn’t work his entire life to win a Nobel Prize. He’s an athlete, with 11-Olympic medals. So, he’s going to do commercials, act, and have fun doing it…. My wife and I worked in LA for years, in the entertainment industry. As far as acting goes or being a pitch man, Lochte’s actually damn good. People who study the craft for years to be “relaxed on camera” can’t do it. Lochte’s only just begun to do this and he’s really done a great job. Moreover, I think we’ll continue to see him in ads and he’ll develop his onscreen presence more…….. That’s my 2-cents.

Thanks, Mel. I really think that Lochte and his management are doing are nice job promoting his brand post Olympics. I am not saying he is a great actor but lets celebrate a swimmer who is getting some main stream exposure and a nice pay check.

agreed….. Lochte’s going to be producing entertaining media over the next 4 years + swimming at a world-class level. We’re lucky he’s still in the pool!
