Rider Men, Delaware Women Pickup Victories In Double-Dual With La Salle

PHILADELPHIA – The Delaware swimming & diving teams had a successful day in Philadelphia with the men earning their first victory of the season, defeating La Salle, and the women taking down both La Salle and Rider.

“It was a fantastic day for our Blue Hens. Both teams competed very well today,” said head coach Pablo Marmolejo. “The men had a very close and tough meet against La Salle and were able to pull out the win in the final few events. Their hard work and perseverance really paid off today.”

The women were led by four victories from freshman Mira Selling who was part of the 200 yard medley relay and took home the 200 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle and 500 yard freestyle in her collegiate debut.

Sophomore Taylor Draganosky was part of the first-place 200 yard medley relay win and individually took home the 100 yard breaststroke and the 200 yard breaststroke. Freshman Natalie Dobrzykowski was first to the wall in the 100 yard backstroke and 200 yard backstroke, while leading the first-place 400 yard freestyle relay and anchoring the 200 yard medley relay.

Senior Ellie Jogani was first to the wall in the 50 yard freestyle and as part of the 400 yard freestyle relay squad with freshman Marietta Gately. Gately also took home the 200 yard IM.

Sophomore Jessica Antonio was a third-place finisher in the 1-meter dive to round out a successful day.

“Our divers had a great showing as well and Coach Ryan (Hunt) is doing a fantastic job with them,” Marmolejo added.

The men’s diving side also had a third place finisher in freshman Doug Vaca with a strong performance in the 3-meter dive.

In the water, senior Kevin Basch led the way with a pair of wins in the 500 yard freestyle with a season-best time of 4:27.27 and the 1000 yard free.

Junior Kevin Bargate was first to the wall in the 200 yard butterfly and had a second-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly.

“This was a great meet as preparation for our midseason invitational in Cleveland in two weeks,” Marmolejo said. “We are looking forward to great swimming there.”

The Blue Hens are back in the pool Nov. 22-24 for the Magnus Cup hosted by Cleveland State which will be their final test of the calendar year.

PHILADELPHIA – Women’s swimming & diving defeated Rider 183-116 and fell to Delaware 201-96 in its first home meet of the season on Saturday. Senior Emily Wolbert and sophomore Phoebe Shaya each collected a first-place finish to lead the team.

MEET NOTES

  • Wolbert’s top finish came in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:06.72. She also touched third in the 100 Fly.
  • Shaya beat out the competition in the 3-meter with a score of 267.90 and placed second in the 1-meter.
  • Silver for Sara: Sophomore Sara Rizzetto touched in second in three different events—the 200 Free, 200 Back and 200 IM.
  • Freshman tracker: Rookie Brynn Peterson impressed in the short distance with second-place times in the 50 Free and 100 Free, while classmate Lauren Fenn touched second in the 100 Back.
  • Other notes: Sophomore Anne Moser had a second and third place finish on the day while senior Carrie Horan clocked in second in the 100 Breast.

UP NEXT

  • The Explorers remain at home next weekend with another double dual. NJIT and Stony Brook come to Kirk Pool with action beginning at 11 a.m.

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men’s swimming & diving team fell to Delaware 156-139 and Rider 186-109 as the Explorers hosted their first meet of the 2019-20 season. Senior Norm Gregory, sophomore Ian Venter and freshman Sam Henninger each finished first on Saturday.

MEET NOTES

  • Gregory took first in the 200 Free with a time of 1:42.72, also placing second in the 50 Free and 100 Free. It was his anchor leg in the final event of the day, the 400 Free Relay, that gave the Explorers’ the top result.
  • Henninger continued the great start to his La Salle career with the best finish in the 1-meter, scoring 293.15. The rookie also placed second in the 3-meter.
  • Venter beat out the field in the 200 Back with a time of 1:52.86 and touched second in the 100 Back.
  • Dyson’s day: Freshman Cole Dyson had a solid outing with a third-place race in the 1000 Free and a fourth-place finish in the 500 Free.
  • Also in the top three were juniors Gustav Swedenborg (third in the 500 Free) and Daniel Johnson (100 Free).
  • About that relay: along with Gregory, that first-place team in the 400 Free contained Johnson, Dyson and Venter.

UP NEXT

  • La Salle will be back in action next Saturday as it hosts NJIT and Stony Brook. The tri-meet starts at 11 a.m.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Rider University men’s swimming and diving team competed in a double dual meet against Delaware and La Salle on Saturday afternoon at Kirk Pool.

The Broncs (4-1) defeated to the host Explorers, 186-109, and Rider also took down the Blue Hens, 186.5-110.5.

On the day, the Rider men won nine different events.

Senior Justin Carey (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) was dominant once again for Rider in the pool, winning all three of the individual events in which he competed. Carey finished first in the 100 back (50.62), 100 free (46.54) and the 100 fly (49.74).

Sophomores David Cooper (Spring, TX/Klein Oak) and Joe Gewartowski (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) each won one individual event on the day. Cooper finished first in the 200 breast at 2:09.43, while Gewartowski touched first in the 50 free with a time of 21.39.

The final two winners in the swimming events on Saturday were freshmen Andrew Iannacone (Yardley, PA/Holy Ghost Prep) and Lucas Racevicius (Watertown, CT/Holy Cross High School). Iannacone took the 100 breast with a time of 59.78 and Racevicius won the 200 IM at 1:57.13.

Junior Dillon Walles (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands High School) had another solid day on the boards for the Broncs. Walles won the 3M for the fifth meet in a row with a score of 343.50. He also added a second-place finish in the 1M with a mark of 292.15.

NOTES
– The Rider 200 medley relay quartet of Justin CareyAndrew IannaconeJack Ruggieri and Joe Gewartowski won with a time of 1:33.61.
– Matt Lequang was second in both the 1,000 free (9:48.36) and the 500 free (4:41.77).
– Lucas Racevicius also added a second-place results in the 200 free with a time of 1:43.47 and the 200 back at 1:54.21.
– David Cooper came in second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.35.
– David Rucci finished third in both the 100 back (52.68) and the 200 back (1:56.24).
– Cole May came in third-place in the 200 fly (1:55.70) and the 100 fly (51.95).
– The Bronc 400 free relay of Joe GewartowskiDaniel BongeWebster Bozzo and Matt Lequang came in second-place with a time of 3:09.68.
– Webster Bozzo was third in the 50 free at 21.92.

Rider next competes in the Bucknell Invitational. The three-day event takes place December 6-8 in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

The Broncs (1-4) fell to the host Explorers, 183-116, and Rider also lost to the Blue Hens, 220-73.

On the day, the Rider women won two different events.

Sophomore Kylie McMahon (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary’s) finished first overall in the 100 fly with a time of 57.94. McMahon also finished third in the 200 fly thanks to touching at 2:08.67.

The other Bronc to win on the day was senior diver Meg Tomayko (Murfreesboro, TN/Siegel). Tomayko came in first-place in the 1M diving event with a score of 254.40. She also finished second in the 3M with a mark of 226.95.

NOTES
– The Rider 200 medley relay quartet of Kayla MayKellie QuinnKylie McMahon and Olivia Iswalt opened the meet with a second-place finish with a time of 1:50.57.
– Kayla May finished third in the 100 back at 59.42.
– Olivia Iswalt was third in the 50 free with a time of 25.20.
– Iswalt also came in fourth in 100 free with a mark of 55.44.

Rider next competes in the Bucknell Invitational. The three-day event takes place December 6-8 in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
