Princeton’s Jovana Sekulic Named Women’s CWPA Division I Player of the Week

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Jovana Sekulic (So., Belgrade, Serbia/The Episcopal Academy) produced 15 goals during a 3-1 week for the No. 7-ranked Tigers of Princeton University in California. For her offensive prowess, Sekulic is named the March 20 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I Player of the Week.

A three-time Rookie of the Week selection (January 24, February 28, April 25) and the March 14 Player of the Week in 2022, she adds the sixth weekly honor to her career awards list after previously earning Player of the Week recognition in 2023 on February 27.

She opened the week by accounting for four goals in an 11-8 handling of No. 9 Long Beach State University on Tuesday, March 14, prior to pumping in six tallies in a 15-11 victory over Division III No. 1/No. 24 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Wednesday, March 15.

At the LMU Invitational hosted by Loyola Marymount University on Saturday, March 18, she notched a hat-trick (three goals) against the host Lions for the difference in a 13-10 win before chipping in a pair of markers during a 9-3 loss to No. 4 the University of California-Los Angeles.

CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK – Lindsey Lucas/Zoe Banks

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Lindsey Lucas (Fr., Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) of No. 7-ranked Princeton University posted 46 saves over the span of four games for the Tigers during a 3-1 week in California to claim recognition as the the March 20 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I co-Defensive Player of the Week.

She shares Defensive Player of the Week recognition with fellow goalkeeper Zoe Banks (Sr., Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) of No. 14-ranked Harvard University.

A six-time weekly honor recipient from the league office in 2023 following prior Defensive Player (January 30, February 13, February 27) and Rookie (January 30, February 27) of the Week nods, Lucas helped Princeton finish 3-1 on the week with victories over No. 9 Long Beach State University (11-8 W), Division III No. 1/No. 24 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (15-11 W) and No. 16 Loyola Marymount University (13-10 W) along with a loss to No. 4 the University of California-Los Angeles (9-3 L).

She opened the week by turning aside 19 shots against Long Beach State on Tuesday, March 14, prior to stopping nine scoring tries against Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, March 15.

At the LMU Invitational hosted by Loyola Marymount on Saturday, March 18, Lucas blocked down eight shots versus the host Lions before notching 10 saves facing UCLA.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Ruby Hodge

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Ruby Hodge (Fr., San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Santa Margarita) of No. 14-ranked Harvard University scored five goals during a 1-2 week for the Crimson in California to take the March 13 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I Rookie of the Week award.

A first-time weekly honor recipient from the league office, she opened the week with three goals in a 13-9 loss at No. 3 the University of California on Wednesday, March 15.

On Saturday, March 18, at Santa Clara University, she chipped in a goal and an assist in a 16-15 overtime loss to No. 12 University of the Pacific prior to denting the twine once in a 16-0 victory over the host Broncos.
