United States President Donald Trump says he may consider pressuring the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to remove the 2028 Summer Olympics from Los Angeles, and also begin talks with FIFA about removing World Cup soccer games from Boston next summer.
Speaking at a press event along with Argentine President Javier Milei on Tuesday, Trump said he would consider actions based on a police car set on fire and a police officer being attacked in Boston, and what he perceives as a mishandling of wildfires in the Los Angeles area by California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Trump has no official authority to remove World Cup games from Boston or the Olympics from Los Angeles, but claimed he could put pressure on FIFA and new IOC president, Kirsty Coventry.
“If I thought LA was not going to be prepared properly, I would move it to another location if I had to,” Trump said. “On that one I’d probably have to get a different kind of a permission, but we would do that.”
Trump and Coventry have yet to hold a meeting regarding the 2028 Los Angeles Games, but Coventry told Reuters in March that she would like to have a meeting with Trump at some point.
Any sort of permission to remove the Games would have to come through the IOC.
Boston isn’t the only World Cup host city that Trump has threatened.
Last month, Trump also criticized the safety of host cities Seattle and San Francisco and claimed games could be removed from them as well.
“If someone is doing a bad job, and I feel there’s unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni (Infantino), the head of FIFA, who is phenomenal, and say let’s move it to another location,” Trump said. “And he would do that. He wouldn’t love to do it, but he’d do it. Very easily, he’d do it.”
In August, Trump announced the creation of a task force for the LA Olympics, naming himself as the chair of the task force.
The executive order called for the task force to coordinate security and planning for the Games, and streamline visa processing and credentialing for athletes, coaches, media and other visitors who’ll be coming to the U.S. for the event.

LA and Boston are great American cities. Yeah they have crime like every other city, but it’s damning to have a president work against his own country for personal gain.
