Pan-Pacs 2010: Odds and Ends from Monday Before the Championships

We learned a little bit more about who would be swimming what at the 2010 Pan-Pac Championships on Monday.

From Tyler Clary’s Twitter…

The 10k is the last event of the meet, the day after the rest of the events end, so why not! Will be interested to see if he decides to actually swim (or finish) the event after a grueling week of competition.

From Chloe Sutton’s Twitter…

With her recent success in the pool, we might be forgetting that Sutton first made her mark on big-time swimming in the open water world. The women’s 1500m is on the last day in the pool, with the 10k the following day. She’s not the only swimmer entered for both events, so now I’m wondering how many other swimmers (like Australia’s Melissa Gorman, who took a disputed bronze at the 2010 Open Water World Championships) might also back out of the mile. Something to keep an eye on as the meet progresses.

In the News

2008 triple-gold medalist Stephanie Rice is experiencing a lot of pain in her shoulders, which has reworked her strategy for the end of the summer season. While her original plan was to fully taper and attack the Pan-Pacs, and then try and hang on for the Commonwelath Games, she now has hugely reduced her schedule at Pan-Pacs to give her shoulder more time to heal before the CG’s. She already seems prepared to have surgery after the CG’s in hopes of a full recovery in time to gear up for the 2012 Olympics.

Different sources are reporting different info about her schedule for Pan Pacs, but the consensus is that she’ll be in the 50 free, 50 fly, 50 back, and 100 free. The USA Today is reporting that’s it, but a few Australian sources say she’ll swim the 100 fly too. I tend to think she’d err towards caution and not swim in 5 individual events, making the 100 fly the logical one to drop…

Michael Phelps announced at a press conference that he is definitely planning on swimming the 400 IM at Pan-Pacs.

“Figure, why not give it a shot? Like I said before, I’m probably not in the best shape I want to be to swim that race. We’ll see if we can make worlds. And if we can make worlds I’ll know what to do to put my body in shape for next summer to be able to swim the kind of times and level I want to swim.”

Will be interesting to see what his time looks like. Relatively weak competition in the 400 IM (still world-class swimmers, just not as fierce as some of the other races at the meet), so Phelps probably still gets a medal.

Sorry Keegers, but every public university in Texas has the same number of school days. There’s no way that UT or Tech or UH Anywhere else has a “fall break” or 4 extra holidays and starts/ends the same time. I feel bad for you if Drury jobs you out of a week of education that you paid a lot of money for.

I heard Rice was swimming 50 back, 100 free, 50/100 fly, but this is not confirmed. The only one she has a chance of winning is the 100 fly. She went 57.7 in March to win Aussie Trials, and she has the third best time this year of anyone swimming here (behind Magnuson and Vollmer). She would probably have an outside shot of adding the 50 fly or 50 back for Commonwealths, and maybe she could get on Australia’s struggling (heck, currently no-name) 4×100 free relay. Not sure she could do anything in the 50 free.
