EVANSTON, Ill – Northwestern swimming and diving opened its 2025-26 campaign on Saturday, with both the men’s and women’s programs claiming victories over Southern Illinois and Miami (Ohio).
Saturday’s action saw a pair of pool records broken in the triangular hosted at the Norris Aquatics Center. Stuart Seymour raised the bar for the 100 free, finishing in 42.66 seconds for a Norris-best. Connor Schuster also set a pool record, clocking in at 19.64 seconds in the 50 free.
“It was an exciting way to start our season,” said director of swimming and diving Rachel Stratton-Mills. “We saw great energy across the board and some impressive early performances that set a strong tone for the months ahead. This group has worked hard to build a solid foundation, and we’re looking forward to continuing that momentum as we move deeper into our schedule.”
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats were dominant in all four relay events, with all eight NU relay teams taking the top two spots in each of the four races.
Grey Davis, Teya Nikolova, Ekaterina Nikonova and Lindsay Ervin clocked in at 1:38.49 to secure the win in the women’s 200 medley relay. In the women’s 400 free relay, Ervin, Nikonova, Amy Pan and Audrey Yu touched in at 3:18.80 for an event win.
The men’s 200 medley team of David Gerchik, Matthew Lucky, Seymour and Schuster finished in 1:26.16 to claim the victory. The men’s 400 free quartet of Oliver Kós, Schuster, Seymour and Diego Nosack earned the win with a time of 2:54.71.
Lindsay Ervin and Ekaterina Nikonova secured three event wins each for the ‘Cats, including both relays. Ervin took home a victory in the 50 free with a time of 22.66 seconds, while Nikonova placed first in the 100 free, touching at 49.78 seconds.
Individually, Zoe Nordmann picked up a pair of wins for the Wildcats in the 600 free (5:49.00) and 300 free (2:49.21) to go with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay.
Sydney Smith earned a Northwestern victory in the 200 free, clocking in at 1:47.33.
Hana Shimizu-Bowers represented NU in the 200 fly, placing first with a time of 2:01.83.
Grey Davis picked up a win in the 100 fly, touching in 54.17 seconds.
On the men’s side, Seymour paced the Wildcats with two individual event wins to go along with a pair of relay victories. The Brookfield, Wis. native picked up wins in the 200 free (1:35.40), 100 free (42.66 seconds) and 400 free relay.
In addition to his performance in the 200 medley relay, Gerchik picked up event wins for the Wildcats in the 100 back (47.85 seconds) and 200 back (1:44.71).
Joshua Staples also picked up multiple event wins, securing first-place finishes in the 100 breast (53.67 seconds) and 300 free (2:31.09).
In his first meet as a Wildcat, first-year Gipson Crye placed first in the 600 free (5:27.16).
Diego Nosack secured a win in the 100 fly, finishing in 47.75 seconds.
Shauntel Lim (261.45) captured the women’s three-meter diving event, with Lydia Georgopoulou (261.20) and Chloe Sharpe (258.00) placing second and third, respectively.
The Wildcat divers were dominant on the men’s side, with the ‘Cats capturing the top three spots in the one-meter and top two spots in the three-meter. Adam Cohen (336.70), Ryan Augustine (328.95) and Kyle Ly (323.10) placed in the top three in the men’s three-meter, while Ryan Augustine (319.85) and Kyle Ly (312.60) paced the Wildcats in the three-meter.

EVANSTON, Ill. — The Miami University swimming and diving team hit the road to start the 2025-2026 season at Northwestern University on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025. The RedHawks women finished second of three teams, as they defeated SIU 174-120 and dropped to Northwestern 224-76. The men were second of three teams with a 200-99 victory over SIU and a 203-97 loss to Northwestern.
How it Happened:
- The RedHawks’ first meet of the 2025-2026 season kicked off with the women’s 200-yard medley where the women’s A team finished fourth. Ella Ziegert, Natalie Gilson, Gracie Gregory and Julie Waechter turned in a combined time of 1:42.35.
- The men’s 200-yard medley followed where the A team finished fourth as well. Jensen Nelson, Ian Wihebrink, Duncan Salmen and Tegan Barrier posted a combined time of 1:27.87.
- Casey Stephens finished third in the women’s 600-yard freestyle, earning a time of 6:00.62. Sarah Pophal finished fourth with a time of 6:00.65.
- The men’s 600-yard freestyle was next, where Luke Pugh was second, turning in a time of 5:30.47.
- After that came the women’s 200-yard freestyle, where Chrisna Bezuidenhout finished fifth, recording a time of 1:52.06.
- Next came the men’s 200-yard freestyle. Allen Cotton came in sixth with a time of 1:39.02
- The women’s 100-yard backstroke was next, where Ziegert was fourth, putting up a time of 54.89.
- Nelson finished second in the men’s 100-yard backstroke, turning in a time of 48.09.
- After that was the women’s 100-yard breaststroke. Madison Watschke came in fifth earning a time of 1:03.31.
- The men’s 100-yard breaststroke followed, where Pablo Silva turned in a time of 55.09.
- Gregory finished third in the women’s 200-yard butterfly, putting up a time of 2:04.10
- Up next was the men’s 200-yard butterfly, where Owen Hoban was first, earning a time of 1:47.44.
- After that was the women’s 50-yard freestyle where Gilson finished fourth, turning in a time of 23.41.
- The men’s 50-yard freestyle was next, where Salmen finished second, clocking a time of 20.23. Barrier was right behind him with a time of 20.25. Ian Rodrigues-Kmiliauski was fourth posting a time of 20.34.
- Jenna Halliday finished sixth in the women’s 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.14.
- Rodrigues-Kmiliauski was fourth in the men’s 100-yard freestyle putting up a time of 44.67.
- Next was the women’s 200-yard backstroke where Bezuidenhout finished first, posting a time of 1:56.49
- The men’s 200-yard backstroke followed, where Nelson was third, turning in a time of 1:46.73.
- After that was the women’s 200-yard breaststroke, where Watschke finished third with a time of 2:15.28.
- Silva and Hoban finished first and second in the men’s 200-yard breaststroke, posting times of 1:59.22 and 2:02.45 respectively.
- The women’s 300-yard freestyle was next, where Gregory finished fourth, turning in a time of 2:55.17.
- The men’s 300-yard freestyle followed, where Hendrik Bechtel finished third with a time of 2:38.07. Bryce Menchhofer was fourth, earning a time of 2:39.05.
- Next was the women’s 100-yard butterfly . Ziegert was third, posting a time of 55.40.
- Salmen finished second in the men’s 100-yard butterfly earning a time of 48.11.
- The women’s 200-yard IM was next where Watschke finished third, posting a time of 2:04.72.
- Hoban finished first in the men’s 200-yard IM with a time of 1:48.80. Michal Piela was third, turning in a time of 1:49.31.
- The women’s 400-yard freestyle relay was next, where the women’s A team finished third. Ziegert, Waechter, Halliday and Gilson turned in a combined time of 3:24.97.
- Swimming events concluded with the men’s 400-yard freestyle, where the men’s A team finished third. Rodrigues-Kmiliauski, Cotton, Salmen and Barrier posted a combined time of 2:57.81.
- For diving events, Sydney Rice earned a first place finish in the women’s 1M dive with a score of 253.60
- The men’s 1M dive was next where Paul Hong posted a score of 273.00, which was good for third place.
- Mia Meinhardt earned a sixth place finish in the women’s 3M dive with a score of 236.80.
- Noam Kulbak was fourth in the men’s 3M dive, scoring 314.90.
UP NEXT: The RedHawks swimming and diving team will hit the road and head to Cincinnati to take on the University of Cincinnati, Oct. 17. Diving events start at 12:30 p.m. while swimming events begin later at 3 p.m.

CARBONDALE, Ill. – It was a busy weekend for Southern Illinois swim and dive, who was in action on both Friday and Saturday. The Salukis started the weekend by sweeping UIC before both the men’s and women’s teams lost to Northwestern and Miami (OH) on Saturday.
“Another good weekend of racing against three very good teams,” says head coach Geoff Hanson. “We were looking for individual and team improvement from last weekend to this weekend, and I believe we saw that overall. Several of our top performers showed their experience throughout the two days and our newcomers continued to learn and grow early in this season.”

Southern’s first win on Saturday did not come until event nine, the women’s 100-yard backstroke, which Gallegos won. Two events later, Herron picked up another win on the weekend in the women’s 100-yard backstroke. Herron was responsible for Southern’s next win as will, taking the crown in the women’s 200-yard backstroke. The senior picked up won more win, and SIU’s last on Saturday, in the women’s 200-yard IM.
