Women’s Meet Recap
The Nebraska Cornhuskers won all but one event on the women’s side, partially thanks to senior Gena Jorgenson walking home with three individual event and one relay win.
Jorgenson finished 6th at the NCAA Championships in the 1650 free last season and went on to swim the event at the WUGs over the summer, finishing with a silver medal. She is picking up where she left off, winning the 1000 free, 200 backstroke and 200 IM events over the weekend.
She swam 10:03.42 in the 1000 to touch more than 20 seconds ahead of teammate Alaira Hadford who swam 10:29.13 to finish 2nd overall. In the 200 back, she swam 2:02.96 for the win by a little over three seconds. Both these times were just off the 10:02.71 and 2:01.53 she swam at this same meet last season. She did not swim the 200 IM last year, but she won this year’s event in 2:06.76 to beat teammate Marissa Laurin’s 2:08.17 by a second-and-a-half.
Laurin took Jorgenson’s spot in the 500 free, swimming 5:03.89 to beat 200 free champion Riley Miklos’s time of 5:06.51. Miklos did not finish the meet empy handed, though, she just untouched Guilia Marchi in the 200 free, swimming 1:52.28 to Marchi’s 1:52.89 for the win.
Marchi finished 2nd in the 100 freestyle to the winner of the other two freestyle events, Beatrix Tanko. She also swam on the two winning relays for Nebraska. She started the day with a win in the 50 freestyle, swimming 23.24 to win by half a second over Nebraska teammate Natalie Dunaway’s 23.97. In the 100 free, she swam 51.35 to lead Marchi’s 52.68.
The 200 medley relay went to the Nebraska team of Virginia Consiglia (26.33), Amelia Riggott (28.31), Beatrix Tanko (24.50), Natalie Dunaway (23.17) in 1:42.31, four seconds ahead of Omaha’s time of 1:46.79.
Consiglia and Riggott both won the 100s of their strokes as well with Consiglio swimming 56.72 in the 100 back and Riggott swimming 1:04.46 in the 100 breast.
The 400 freestyle relay was a similar story with Giulia Marchi (52.78), Riley Miklos (52.65), Gena Jorgenson (51.97), Beatrix Tanko (50.65) swimming 3:28.05 to win by almost three seconds.
The other individual event winners were Aurora Zanin who won the 200 fly for the Cornhuskers in 2:05.18, and Abigail Baxter who won both individual diving events.
The Nebraska–Omaha women also had a strong showing, racking up numerous top three finishes over the course of the meet, and two event wins.
Addisyn Storms took first in the women’s 200 breaststroke with her time of 2:21.19 to win the first Omaha event of the meet. She came in more than two seconds ahead of Nebraska’s Katy Zboinski’s 2:23.44. Storms also finished 2nd in the 100 breaststroke, touching in 1:05.17.
Directly after that swim, Julia Thomas won the 100 fly with her time of 56.76 coming in more than half-a-second ahead of South Dakota State’s Jenna Currier in 2nd. Omaha teammate Catalina Kahan finished 3rd in 57.34.
Mia Jacobs and Kate Novinksi finished 2nd and 3rd in the 200 backstroke swimming 2:06.13 and 2:06.93 respectively.
South Dakota State saw Gigi Hioki walk home with two 3rd place finishes in the 200 free (1:53.62) and 100 free (52.78) to join Jenna Currier’s 100 fly top three swim.

The Jackrabbits won both breaststroke events with David Bosch swimming 56.74 in the 100 to be the only swimmer under 57 in the event and Cody Vertin winning the 200 breast in 2:04.24.
Vertin also won the last individual event of the meet, the 400 IM, which they swam while the women swam the 200 IM. Vertin swam 4:06.44 to win the event by nearly four seconds over teammate Evan Schott.

Tip of the cap to Nebraska, but watch out – South Dakota State is going to be strong next year. Big recruiting class coming in.
