ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Navy men’s swimming and diving team strengthened its hold on first place while the women’s team jumped up from third place to within striking range of first-place Villanova, Friday at the Navy Invitational at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis.
The men’s team qualified at least four swimmers for the 10-lane championship final in each of the five individual events contested on the middle day of the three-day meet as the Mids increased their point total of 1,542 points and their advantage over second-place UC Santa Barbara to over 600 points.
The Navy women’s team started Friday in third place, 222 points behind UCSB and 187 points in back of second-place Villanova. At the end of the day, Villanova had taken over first place with 1,079 points and Navy moved into second place with 1,042 points.
Winning events for the men’s team were Luca Oliva in the 400 IM, Juan Mora in the 100 breast, Ben Irwin in the 100 back and Luke Ogren in the three-meter diving event. Additionally, the foursome of Irwin, Mora, Lachlan Andrew and Ben Denman-Grimm won the 200 medley relay.
Highlighting the women’s efforts were third-place finishes by Brynn Stoneburg in the 200 free, Lauren Walsh in the 100 breast and Ela Habjan in the 100 back.
The Navy Invite concludes Saturday with swimming trial heats at 10 a.m., diving prelims at 12:30 p.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m.

Annapolis, Md. – Villanova swimming and diving delivered a strong second day at the Navy Fall Invitational, highlighted by a new program record and 20 top five finishes. Currently, the women are in first place with 1,079 points, while the men sit third with 710. The Wildcats’ combined total of 1,789 places them second overall heading into the final day of competition.
In the women’s 200 Medley Relay, Villanova placed fifth in 1:42.37 with the lineup of Arabella Lee, Winnie Jalet, Anna Kilponen and Riley Kudlac. The B relay took eighth in 1:44.14, and the C relay finished 10th in 1:44.82.
The men’s 200 Medley Relay delivered the highlight of the session as Cole Gorsuch, Hugh Boris, Zach Sutter and Sam Randall set a new Villanova program record in 1:28.21, placing fourth. The B team placed 12th in 1:31.95, and the C team finished 14th in 1:32.76.
In the 100 Fly, Anna Farley placed second in 53.84. Kilponen finished fourth (54.44), Lee fifth (54.76), Annie Mee sixth (55.06) and Katie White seventh (55.23). Martina Lonati added a ninth-place finish in 55.55. For the men, Sam Randall placed 15th in 48.77, with Sutter finishing 16th in 48.79.
Four of the top five spots belonged to the ‘Cats in the 400 IM. Peri Gaguzis won the event in 4:16.89, followed by Meghan Tiernan in third (4:18.79), Farley in fourth (4:19.96), Emily Herr in fifth (4:20.19).
In the men’s 400 IM, Justin Nowicki led Villanova with a fifth-place finish in 3:53.22.
In the women’s 200 Free, Carlota Colomer Guasch finished second in 1:50.13. Marlene Blanke placed fourth (1:50.93), Kudlac fifth (1:51.22) and Amylia Higgins eighth (1:51.77). On the men’s side, Randall placed 17th (1:40.22).
In the women’s 100 Breast, Jalet placed second in 1:01.58, a performance that moved her to No. 2 on Villanova’s all-time performers list.
In the 100 Back, Alana Leen finished fifth for the women in 55.75, while Cole Gorsuch placed 11th for the men in 48.89.
The women grabbed a 3–4 finish in the 800 Free Relay. Farley, Kudlac, Blanke and Colomer Guasch placed third in 7:24.45, and the B team of Leen, Lonati, Mee and Higgins placed fourth in 7:27.08.
The men stacked the leaderboard with a 4–5–6–7 finish to close the night. The A team recorded a 6:44.10 finish for fourth.
In men’s 3-meter diving, Nate Warson placed third with 324.35 points and Christopher Jones finished fourth with 294.60.
The Wildcats head into final day of the Navy Invitational tomorrow.
