Top 8

  1. Marrit Steenbergen (NED) – 57.96
  2. Barbora Janickova (CZE) – 57.97
  3. Roos Vanotterdijk (BEL) – 58.02

  8. Anastasia Gorbenko (ISR) – 58.31

Barbara Janickova shot out to a lead on the fly leg of the first 100 IM semi-final, providing some outside smoke in a heat also containing all three of the women’s 50 fly medalists. She matched Roos Vanotterdijk, the #8 swimmer in history, through the rest of the race and managed to eke out the heat win right at the touch to clock 57.97.

That was nearly a full second under her previous best and Czech record of 58.94 from the Slovak Cup this October. She is now the 5th-fastest swimmer in the world this season.

Janickova was just 0.01 seconds away from top spot through the semi-finals, with Marrit Steenbergen clocking 57.96 to win the second heat. With the top eight swimmers separated by just 0.35 seconds, the final tomorrow could be a close one.

Just behind Janickova and Vanotterdijk in the first of the semi-finals was Irishwomen Ellen Walshe, who continued her record-setting exploits from the World Cup series with yet another Irish record here. She touched in 58.19 to lower her previous standard of 58.55 by 0.36 seconds, and will go into the final tomorrow as the 5th seed.

This is her seventh short course Irish record of the season, after she reset the 200 fly (x3), 400 IM (x2) and 200 IM records on the World Cup tour. She is the top seed in all three of those events later this week.

The final 100 IM national record came in the men’s event courtesy of Robert Pedersen, who lowered the previous Danish mark of 52.42 by over half a second.

He was the #9 seed coming into the competition, so has exceeded expectations already by qualifying 6th into the final. He nearly matched his 50 back Danish record of 23.20 while leading off the mixed medley relay in 23.22 this morning, so looks in great form in Lublin.
