Mewen Tomac Takes Down French 100 Backstroke Record En Route To Silver

2025 EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The men’s 100m backstroke final was one of the must-see races to watch on day four of the 2025 European Short Course Championships and the field didn’t disappoint.

Leading the pack was world record holder and Olympic champion in the LCM 100 back, Thomas Ceccon of Italy, who threw down a blistering 49.29 to grab the gold.

Behind him, however, was 24-year-old Mewen Tomac of France, who ripped a new national record of 49.46 en route to silver.

British maestro Ollie Morgan rounded out the podium in 49.68 as the bronze medalist.

As for Tomac, the gold medalist from two years ago split 11.47/12.15/12.87/12.97 to soar to the wall in the best time of his career.

Entering this competition, Tomac’s lifetime best rested at the 49.72 notched when topping the podium in Otopeni, Romania. That effort saw the Frenchman split 23.68/26.04.

The former French record stood at the 49.57 Jeremy Stravius put on the books in 2013, so Tomac sliced .11 off that longstanding benchmark this evening.
