The 2026 Indy Spring Cup continued on Friday, and Van Mathias continued to pick up wins, swimming the top time in the men’s 50 breaststroke.
Mathias touched in 26.83 in the final, half-a-second off his American Record time of 26.39 from April. He was slightly faster in the prelims, swimming 26.73 to set the meet record. Louisville’s Finnley Conklin finished 2nd in 27.61, a big drop from the 28.25 mark he swam in July at the Futures Championships.
Another huge swim on the men’s side came from 16-year-old Yi Zheng from Carmel Swim Club. The high school junior swam 4:17.06 in the men’s 400 IM, setting a new lifetime best time by about two tenths from the 4:17.20 he swam at the 2025 World Junior Championships last summer. The Stanford commit will retain his position as the 5th fastest 15-16 American swimmer in history in the event.
Aaron Shackell won the men’s 200 freestyle in 1:48.23, two seconds off his personal best 1:46.35 from March of 2024.
On the women’s side, Anna Peplowski picked up two event wins. In the 200 freestyle, she swam 1:58.01, a little more than two seconds off her season best 1:55.82 from the Bergen Swim Festival. She beat Liberty Clark‘s 1:58.37 by just over three tenths.
Clark’s time was about two tenths off her lifetime best 1:58.18 from the U.S. Open in December. The bronze went to 16-year-old Ellie Clarke, from Carmel Swim Club, who touched in 2:00.02 to take three seconds off her previous lifetime best of 2:03.50, which she swam in July.
Peplowski also won the women’s 200 backstroke. She touched in 2:09.78, coming in more than three seconds ahead of Alex Shackell‘s 2:13.19 in 2nd. Peplowski’s lifetime best stands at 2:08.90 from the Pro Swim Series in Westmont.
