Lukas Martens on Racing in Bergen After Illness Post-China Open: “I feel happy with the races”

2026 Bergen Swim Festival

After putting up solid swims at the China Open in March, Lukas Martens was expecting to race at the Swim Open Stockholm but got sick after traveling home. However, the world record holder was still able to compete in Bergen, where he threw down some notable times.

In the 200/400 Frees, Martens was 1:45.6 & 3:44.2, winning both handily and setting meet records in both. The Olympic champion also swam the 200 back, where he set a new meet record in 1:55.8, also breaking the German record in the event.

Martens will compete in the German Trials this coming weekend, where he will vie to qualify for the European Championships later this summer.

Not exactly quoted correctly but he said ‘I am not in that good shape right now’ and still did those times, and yes he was 4+ seconds off his personal best time. I wonder if he could go 1:54 if he did it a championship meet such as Euro’s but between the distance events and possible relay and open water, the 200 back does probably not fit in.

Oooh can’t wait for his 100 (and his 200, although that’s usually not especially fast at nationals).

For reference, at last year’s nationals he went 21.83 50 free and 1:45.07 200 free, as well as 47.30 100 free prelim before scratching the final.

I don’t know, you never know with this guy. Although not expecting it, it wouldn’t chock me to see a 1:43 here from him, and if that happened, finally a PB after 4 years could happen this year, or even a WR

Popovici is NOT breaking 1:42 this year (though he could go 46.3)
