  3. Ellis Crisci (TST) — 15:32.32

Luka Mijatovic swam to a 14;59.27 1500 freestyle to become the top American in the event so far this year as well as the #4 performer all-time in the 17-18 age group. Mijatovic just aged up as he turned 17 last month. He now becomes the youngest American all-time to break the 15-minute mark.

All-Time Top 17-18 Boys, LCM 1500 Freestyle

  1. Larsen Jensen — 14:45.29 — 2004
  2. Bobby Finke — 14:48.70 — 2018
  3. Luke Whitlock — 14:53.00 — 2024
  4. Luka Mijatovic — 14:59.27 — 2026
  5. Luke Ellis — 15:00.24 — 2024

Mijatovic dropped over 15 seconds off his previous personal best of a 15:15.95 that he swam back at the 2024 Junior Pan Pac Championships. That swim made him the #7 performer all-time in the 15-16 age group. He notably holds the 15-16 national age group (NAG) records in the 200, 400, and 800 long course meter freestyles. He will search for his first 17-18 NAG record now that he has aged up.

Since 2024 Junior Pan Pacs, Mijatovic has only swam the 1500 free three times. He swam a 15:16.31 in March 2025 at the Pro Series stop in Westmont and swam a 15:17.02 a month ago. He did not race the event at 2025 US Summer Nationals but his time tonight would have been 3rd only behind Bobby Finke who won in a 14:48.65 and David Johnston who was 2nd in a 14:57.83.

With his swim tonight, Mijatovic also becomes the fastest American so far this year as well as #17 in the world. Finke now sits as the #2 American this season with a 15:01.70 from January’s Pro Series stop in Austin. Mijatovic is also the fastest American this year in the 400 and 800 free.

The historic list and dates really put into perspective what a super freak Larsen Jensen was as a high schooler at Mission Viejo.

Someone somewhere remarked that he has the face of a Cabbage Patch Kid and now I can’t unsee it.

do you know where that term, cabbage patch kids/babies really comes from? a century ago, babies in incubators, on display in the public, looking for parents/farmers to adopt them. .where DID they come from hmm? youtube it. Luka LOOKS like a record-breaking swimming machine, one to watch for 2028, 2032 & 2036 OG and many many Worlds. (wish it landed this time LAST month–some respect to THAT Bobby. A 15:03 in 1976!!!!

He’s only a junior and he broke a 17 year old NAG record? Wow. I feel like people that do that usually at least 20.

Where would he rank among all male NCAA recruits? I’d say top 5 minimum, likely top 3

If he focused on the event more, I wouldn’t be surprised if he started contending for international teams in the 1500 in upcoming years
