Virginia’s Leah Smith and Virginia Tech’s Nathan Hoisington were named the ACC Swimmers of the Week on Tuesday after both posted season bests to close their dual meet seasons with team wins as well.
The freshman Smith has already won this award twice in her young career, and her latest was after a 9:33.29 in the 1000 free: a new Virginia school record and Virginia pool record, as well as the fastest time in the country so far. That’s not a race that will be on the schedule at the ACC or NCAA Championships, but it is a strong indicator of where she might sit in her primary events, the 200, 500, and 1650 freestyles, in the last six weeks of her season.
Hoisington is not the most familiar name on the Virginia Tech roster, but he had a breakout meet as Virginia Tech hosted the un-scored Virginia Tech Invitational.
At that meet, Hoisington won both the 100 (54.89) and 200 (2:02.79) breaststrokes, taking 1.5 and 2.6 seconds, respectively, off of his previous season bests. He now ranks 10th in the conference in the 100 this year, and with those swims should secure his spot on the Hokies’ ACC Championship roster (he’s their fastest breaststroker this year, though he may not get the medley relay spot still over freshman Brandon Fiala). Coming into the weekend, he was ranked 43rd in the conference in the 100.
Male Diver of the Week honors went to Virginia’s JB Kolod, who broke the school and pool records en route to a sweep of the springboards over Pitt. Female Diver of the Week honors went to Clemson’s Emily Howard.
