We saw day one of the 2025 South African Short Course Championships unfold today from the GC Jolliffee Swimming Pool in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
33-year-old Olympic champion Chad le Clos was in the water, racing in the men’s 100m freestyle final.
Le Clos stopped the clock at 47.55 (22.56/24.99) to get the job done, handily beating his competitors in the only time under the 49-second barrier.
Runner-up status went to Jarden Eaton, who touched in 49.49 followed by Tai Pearson, who earned bronze in 49.57.
As for le Clos, he owns the South African national record at 45.78, a time he established during the 2017 World Cup.
This competition represents his first time back in the water since opting out of most of the 2025 racing schedule due to a nagging back injury.
The women’s 100m breast saw 22-year-old Lara van Niekerk get it done for gold, hitting a tune of 1:05.38, gettng to the wall over a second ahead of her competitors.
Morgan Cope posted 1:06.91 for silver as Chanel Veldsman notched 1:08.49 for bronze.

I’m a bit concerned the writer had a stroke during the last paragraph. Everything ok, Retta?
Gosh!
did she have a stroke?
I don’t know if we should call someone?
It was perhaps written by using a speech to text app, and uploaded before proof reading ?
If that was speech to text I’d be even more worried about a stroke.
Winner was Jessica Thompson (future Hoo) who also won the 100 Free.
Thanks for your concern, just hit ‘publish’ too soon 🙂
Le Clos should be next EG participant
